W

hen Jackie Lubman began
searching for a long-lost
relative, she had little to

go on.
"In my mother's 1930 diary, she
lists a Mr. J. Ginsberg, who was living
at 2701 Blaine Ave. in Detroit;' wrote
Lubman of Liverpool, England. "My
maternal grandmother was Annie
Henya Brosky. Her maiden name
was Ginsberg, the daughter of David
Ginsberg and Bessie Kolchinsky of
Kanatop, Russia. She was born on
Sept. 1, 1870, and married my grand-
father, Harris Gersha Brosky, before
coming to Liverpool as a young bride.
"I realize it is a long shot and the
family could have moved or died out
many years ago',' Lubman wrote.
Enter Marc D. Manson of
Farmington Hills, past president and
life member of the Jewish Genealogical
Society of Michigan. He provided
names, dates and places that may spur
the memory of someone who knew
J. Ginsberg. From R. L. Polk Detroit
city directories, Manson determined
a Joseph Ginsberg lived in the Wortell
and the Carter-Linwood apartments in
the 1930s. He and his wife, Dora, along
with their son and daughter-in-law,
Abraham and Esther Ginsberg, also are
listed as living at 2701 Blaine.
In the 1941 Polk directory, Dora,
"widow of Joseph," is listed at 2075
W. Philadelphia, renting a room from
Esther Jackson. Abraham is listed
as a driver for the LaSalle Window
Shade Co. Inc., residing at 8540
Linwood Ave. By 1941, neither Dora
nor Abraham were listed in phone
directories.
Manson found May 22, 2010, Social
Security Death Index information
for David L. Ginsburg of Farmington
Hills. His birthdate matches the
1930 census listing for Abraham and
Esther Ginsberg's son, but his name
is spelled "Ginsburg" rather than
"Ginsberg."
In an interesting twist, Manson
said, "My father and his parents
lived in an apartment at 2201 Blaine
in 1928, just a few blocks from the
Ginsbergs. Small world, huh?" I I
