veterans from various posts
in Metro Detroit joined in
a Hometown Hero Awards program
of the Airmen & Family Readiness
Program Group of the 12th Wing/
Air National Guard based at Selfridge
Air National Guard Base near Mount
Clemens.
The six JWV members cited were
Irving Bernstein of Southfield; Stanley
Eisenberg, Post 135 commander;
Joseph Goidring of West Bloomfield;
Martin Levine of Huntington Woods;
Alvin Lewis of Oak Park and Sheldon
Schwartz of Novi.
Deborah Schroeder, manager of the
Airmen & Family Readiness Program,
and Bettina Boyd planned the pro-
gram.
Schwartz, a life member of the
Silverman-Lipshaw-Hoberman Post
135 of the JWV acted as coordinator
between the two groups. He gave a
history of the JWV as the oldest char-
tered, continuously serving veterans
organization in America.
Schwartz said 78 veterans from
the Civil War era in 1896 formed the
Hebrew Union Veterans.
Brig. Gen. Michael Peplinski,
Selfridge base commander, wel-
comed the JWV members and the Air
National Guard families. Peplinski pre-
sented certificates, plaques and awards
to ANG members and their units for
their dedication and service.
Tech. Sgt. Alan Little, Schwartz's
nephew and a member of the ANG,
thanked each of the JWV members for
their patriotism in previous wars and
conflicts.
Members of the JWV were asked to
return in January to welcome more

Elaine's Presentation: 7 Keys to Unlock Autism" will provide practical,
innovative and insightful hands-on strategies for parents and teachers to
help children with autism reach their potential and ensure success. The
EMMY winning documentary "Autism: The Musical" is an inspirational film
that follows 5 children with autism and their families as they participate
in The Miracle Project, Elaine's theater arts program. The film shows how
patience, understanding, love, and community can be used to help
children with autism better adapt and socialize with each other and in the
world. During the Q & A, Elaine will further share her inspiring journey
raising her son Neal with autism, and her other programs.
