Following an overview by Ismael Ahmed, former director of the Michigan Department of Human Services, deputy editorial page editor Detroit Free Press Brian Dickerson will moderate a discussion by a panel of experts. Gilda Jacobs, president and CEO of the Michigan League for Human Services and former state senator, will address effective advocacy in the new political landscape. She will be joined by Perry Ohren, chief program officer of Jewish Family Service, who will discuss how poverty has affected the Detroit Jewish community; Jane Marshall, executive director of the Food Bank Council of Michigan, who will talk about food assistance programs in Michigan; and Jessie Rossman, staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, who will relate how inadequacies in the public defense system affects those living in poverty. The program is open to the public, and there is no admission charge. Participants are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the Berkley-based Yad Ezra kosher food bank and/or a new or gently used children's book to be donated to the Detroit Jewish Coalition for Literacy.
