T

he Jewish Community Center
in Oak Park will honor long-
time supporters who played a
large role in making the Jimmy Prentis
Morris Building a full-service JCC.
In 1977, Janet Levine and Marcy
Feldman began a grassroots neighbor-
hood effort to bring improvements,
including the addition of a new pool to
the center. They organized meetings in
homes, contacted friends and worked
tirelessly to make an entire commu-
nity's dream come true.
Honorees include Marcy and
Michael Feldman, and Janet and
Ellsworth Levine. The gala benefit
will be at the JPM building, 8 p.m.
Saturday, Jan. 29. "Celebrating Their
Vision — Building Our Future" will
include strolling supper and perfor-
mance by comedian Keith Barany.
Barany has toured overseas five
times entertaining U.S. troops and has
shared the stage with Bob Hope, Jerry
Seinfeld, Ray Romano, Larry David,
Jon Stewart, Joan Rivers and others.

Tu B'Shevat
Seder
Congregation Beth
Ahm will host a Tu
b'Shevat Learning
Seder for men,
women and teens
led by Rabbi Steven
Rabbi
Rubenstein and
Rubenstein
sponsored by the
Men's Club 5:30
pm. Wednesday, Jan. 19. The event,
open to the community, will begin
with a pizza and salad supper.
Tu b'Shevat, the Jewish New Year
of the Trees, showcases specific fruits
and other foods indigenous to Israel

and has emerged as a focal point
for Jewish environmental awareness
grounded in Jewish teachings. The
idea of having a Tu b'Shevat seder was
the brainchild of the mystics of 16th
century Tzfat — the same creative
scholars who invented the Friday
night Kabbalat Shabbat service and
all-night Torah study on Shavuot.
Beth Ahm is located at 5075 W.
Maple in West Bloomfield. The cost
is $6 per person and reservations are
a must: Marc Soble (248) 661-0416
