Urgency From
635 Mile Road
When Bloomberg LP President
and former New York City
Deputy Mayor Dan Doctoroff
addressed December's annual
gathering of
the Oakland
Business
Roundtable,
he offered an
array of sug-
gestions for
revitalizing
Detroit and
Dan Doctoroff
the metropoli-
tan area.
The son of former Michigan
Court of Appeals Chief Judge
Martin Doctoroff, Dan empha-
sized three ingredients essential
to a Detroit turnaround —
urgency, a big vision and execu-
tion.
As an example of urgency,
he referenced a recent meet-
ing he had with 635 Mile, a
nonprofit group comprised
largely of young Jewish
Detroiters currently residing in
New York City, but passionate
about revitalizing their home-
town. Doctoroff said he was
impressed with their energy,
commitment and desire to play
a role in transforming Detroit
— whether or not they were
hoping to return.
In contrast, Doctoroff said
that at a recent meeting with
Detroit community and foun-
dation leaders, he was struck
by a sense of defeatism and an
absence of urgency.
As an example, he said that
after offering to be helpful,
three months passed before
any community or foundation
leaders got back to him, and
only in a perfunctory way.
If our Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit arms
them with a big vision and
commits the resources needed
for proper execution, our young
adults, from near and far, are
urgently awaiting the oppor-
tunity to help transform and
revitalize Detroit, Southeastern
Michigan and our Jewish com-
munity. 1_1
