Fisher Federation Building, Bloomfield Township. Mary Masson, an early childhood education consultant for Oakland Schools, will give volunteers tools to provide the maximum literacy experience when reading aloud to young children and in guiding them in selecting appropriate books for various age and skill levels. Free books for DJCL students, many of whom have never owned a book, will be distributed to volunteers at the workshop. Masson has taught students PK-3 for more than 23 years in Oakland County and in other states. She has worked as an early childhood education consultant for Oakland Schools, the county's intermediate school district serving all 28 Oakland County public school districts and charter schools, for the past 10 years. Founded and facilitated by the Jewish Community Relations Council of Metropolitan Detroit (JCRC), the DJCL engages volunteers from local Jewish organizations, impacting K-3 students in schools in Detroit and Oakland County through tutoring and enrichment programs and book drives. The DJCL, one of the JCRC's most popular and enduring outreach projects, conducts training workshops and provides resources for its volunteer tutors. JCRC board member Ruth Grey and Ellie Slovis are co-chairs of the DJCL.
