Reduce Heating Costs

html.
• Install an energy-efficient furnace. Choose an Energy
Star model.
• Be certain your furnace is tuned up and replace the
filters as frequently as needed to save energy.
• Upgrade your wall and ceiling insulation. Seal and

corn.
• When selecting insulation, make your decision on
R-value, not inches. R-value refers to the material's
"resistance" to changes in temperature. The numbers
are efficiency ratings and are a more accurate guide
than material thickness. The recommended R-values
differ from geographic region to region. Check with
your state Department of Energy.
• The federal government and many states offer tax
credits for insulating your home and high-efficiency
furnaces. Be sure to save all your receipts for tax time.
• Find and seal other leaks at your location with weath-
er stripping, caulk or insulation.
• Install a ceiling fan. Change the direction of the fan
to push warm air down in the winter. Choose an Energy
Star model.
• Install storm windows and replace existing windows
and sliding doors. Consider replacing single pane win-
dows with double pane. Double-glazing generally cuts
heat loss by 50 percent. Triple glazing saves even
more. Again look for the Energy Star label.
• Consider a plastic layer over single pane glass if too
expensive to replace.
• Keep window curtains open during the day. This

allows passive

and can save on
heating.
• Close the curtains
at night to keep in the
heat. Also consider insu-
lated shutters that fit
snugly into window
frames.
• Install a program-
mable thermostat.

For Judy Gottlieb, life went along in a
normal fashion until a health scare
changed everything around her. Her
illness and treatment required her to
stop working, even as costs mounted.
Her family, dealing with the economic
downturn on their own, could offer
emotional support, but not an
outpouring of financial backing. Judy
came to Hebrew Free Loan looking for
assistance as she restructured her life.
"I sat there, nervous and wondering
how on earth I got there," Judy says,
"but the people at Hebrew Free
Loan made it so easy for me. They
gave me more than money, they
listened to me and made suggestions.
Those people cared about me. By
the time I left, I felt so much better
about myself."
Now feeling well and with a
positive attitude, Judy says, "I can
focus on other things. I have a lot
more living to do."
