Building Community Celebration! Chaldean-Jewish initiative toasts successes while pledging to work even harder together. Robert Sklar Editor I Detroit Jewish News Vanessa Denha Garmo - Editor I Chaldean News Tenth of a 10-part monthly series or nine months, the Metro Detroit Chaldean and Jewish communi- ties have made a concerted effort to get to know one another — to experi- ence what's special to each culture, to dis- cover the similarities, to spark respectful working relationships and to inspire last- ing new friendships. The impetus has been "Building Community" This joint initiative of the two ethnic communities has featured net- working, workgroups, special events and a newspaper series tracking developments along the way since the April 1 launch. Organizers are now laser-focused on sustaining the momentum into 2011. Metro Detroit's Chaldean and Jewish corn- munities have common roots in the Middle East (Iraq for the Chaldeans and Israel for the Jews). The Chaldean community's arrival and assimilation in Metro Detroit over the last 25 years mirrors the earlier business and civic-minded patterns set by Detroit Jewry. Today the two ethnic groups share parallel patterns in geographic location, entrepreneurial interests and professional careers. Leaders from both ethnic groups contribute to Southeast Michigan's eco- nomic, philanthropic, political, cultural and religious wellbeing. The intent of Building Community has been to have the communities mingle (and mingle some more), appreciate each other's traditions and serve as a regional or even national model for a multicul- tural ethnic network.
