Grandparents' Role
Thank you so much for your instruc-
tive article "Sensitivity" (Dec. 2, page
19), which dealt with the Conservative
movement's consideration of more
openness with regard to children from
intermarried families.
Not only was it informative and
enlightening with regard to the dif-
ferences in guidelines, but it also
highlights what has become a growing
issue for the Jewish community, spe-
cifically for the grandparents of these
children.
Often, Jewish grandparents question
their role in regard to their grandchil-
dren who are being raised in interfaith
homes. The challenges that these
grandparents face are often overlooked
and should be attended to in a guided
and supportive way.
For this reason, National Council
of Jewish Women, Greater Detroit
Section has agreed to facilitate a May
program called Grandparents Circle
for grandparents whose adult children
have intermarried. This program was
developed by the New York-based
Jewish Outreach Institute of New York.

Heed Wakeup Call
The failure of Metro Detroit's Arab
American organizations to condemn
Helen Thomas' anti-Semitic diatribes
is as much as indictment of our com-
munity as it is theirs. Our Jewish orga-
nizations have dedi-
cated time, energy
and resources to
bridge building with
Muslim and Arab
groups and leaders,
ostensibly to foster
mutual respect and
understanding.
Helen Thomas
Often, such arrange-
ments demonstrate
a troubling lack of due diligence on
the part of our leadership that under-
mines the very welfare and security of
Jewish Detroit.
Though our community has
failed to heed the warnings of such
national experts as the American
Jewish Committee's Yehudit Barsky,
who inveigh against indiscriminate
outreach especially to groups that
do not honor the legitimacy and
sovereignty of the Jewish State of
Israel (let alone to those who seek to
destroy it), the enthusiastic support of
Helen Thomas' odious anti-Semitism

by Metro Detroit Arab and Muslim
groups should be a jarring wakeup
call.
Where is the outcry from "out-
reach partners" cultivated by
our Federation-supported Jewish
Community Relations Council, our
synagogues, Hillels, the Children of
Abraham project, the Greater Detroit
Interfaith Round Table and others?
Instead of diverting our commu-
nity's precious resources to groups
and individuals who condone anti-
Semitism and thus are complicit in its
propagation, we would be well advised
to focus instead on asserting for our-
selves and defending our children and
grandchildren from such menacing
hatreds.

Ameinu's Camping Tie
I really enjoyed reading Associate
Editor Alan Hitsky's article about
Camp Tavor ("Tough Love Dec. 2,
page 57). Both of my now adult daugh-
ters attended Tavor in Three Rivers
and we all have many fond memo-
ries of the camp, which helped them
develop leadership skills and critical
thinking.
I'd like to add that Habonim Dror,
the youth movement that is the
umbrella group for all the Habonim
camps in the U.S. and Canada, is
celebrating its 75th anniversary this
year. The parent/adult organization
associated with the Habonim camps
is Ameinu, a pro-Israel, progressive
movement active in the Detroit area

Corrections
• In the letter "Jewish Student
Protections" (Dec. 30, page 8), philan-
thropist A. Alfred Taubman's name was
misspelled.
• In the story "A Shabbat To
Remember" (Nov. 11, Page 14), the
name of the late Sgt. Myron Rosenthal,
19, whose plane disappeared over the
English Channel in 1945, was omitted
from a list of Congregation Shaarey
Zedek veterans known to have been
killed in action in World War II.
• The story "Down Under" (Dec.
23, page 39) should have stated that
Michael Fishman has competed in six
previous international competitions
and has won six medals. He is cur-
rently in Australia serving as captain
for Team USA in the Maccabi Australia
International Games.
