Now think about what you could do to stop the blockage from hap- pening in the first place. That message was delivered by Weight Watchers Group President Florine Mark to more than 100 elementary students from Detroit's Davison Elementary visiting the Detroit Science Center Dec. 3. The event, entitled Healthy Fresh Fit, included a food tasting center and interactive learning stations. The first in a series of presentations, the program was designed to teach students about the dangers of childhood obesity "I grew up as an overweight child right here in Detroit, but most of my problems had to do with me not really knowing what or even how to make good choices:' said Mark. According to the National Fruit & Vegetable Alliance, 88 percent of children do not eat their recommended amount of fruits and 92 percent do not eat the recommended allowance of vegetables. Consequently, more than 25 million American children are obese, or at risk of becoming obese. "We really want kids to know that you don't have to give up fun or the yum factor to adopt a healthier lifestyle said Mark, a Detroit Public Schools alumna. "Florine did a good job with the kids, especially with that M & M story. They were talking about it on the bus ride back to school;' said Regina Isaac, Davison Elementary student teacher. Isaac praised the program for its creativity and effectiveness. "It was real informative and now the kids under- stand the different food groups." Mohammed Khan, another third grader, enjoyed "the pear because it was juicy',' but not the asparagus because "it was too hard." The event was designed to encourage children to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables each day, learn portion con- trol, eat fewer high-fat foods, limit sugar intake and become more active. "The success of this event exceeded our expectations',' said Kelly Fulford, vice president of the Science Center's Sales & Marketing department. "The kids were very excited and learned that to have a healthy mind, you need a healthy body." Four more events will be delivered to students at the Detroit Science Center in 2011.
