With the diversity our current popula- tion demonstrates, is it any wonder that long and short are so much in our vocabu- lary? Speaking of fashions, (yes, we were; what happened to your short-term memory?) let us not even dwell on the longjohns vs. the (short) thong. If it isn't showing, it shouldn't matter. Be wary of the friend who wants to make a long story short; that is rarely the case and you may be in for some tiring listening. Too many of us tend to be long winded when, in reality, people would prefer us to be short and sweet. At one time, schools would teach penmanship so that our writing would be legible, nay, beautifully legible. The business world then came up with the boon of something called shorthand, the secretary's pal. Now we find those who cannot read cursive let alone shorthand are so much into abbrevia- tions that text messaging is the new Yiddish Limerick Between Summer And Winter In zummer siz hays,* we shvitz**, what a pain! We hide from di zun*** and pray for some rain. Mir gayen tzum yahm ****, or swim in the pool. We do everything to keep ourselves cool. But when vinter***** arrives, we want zummer again. Zummer siz hays — summer it's hot Shvitz — sweat Di zun — the sun Mi gayen tzum yahm — we go to the beach Vinter — winter Limerick writer Rachel Kapen is a West Bloomfield resident. theJEWISHNEWS Shabbat Lights Cover Story on page 12 33 Spotlight Business 20 Family Focus 40 Sports 24 Staff Box/Phone List .... 3 Synagogue List 26 Letters 6 44 Marketplace 45 To Do!/Calendar 37 Mazel Toy! 42 To 39 Torah Portion Do!/Crossword Metro 14 Obituaries 49 Opinion 30 Columnists Roundup 8 Danny Raskin Spirituality 25 Robert Sklar Health & Fitness page 21 Shabbat: Friday, Dec. 31, 4:51 p.m. Shabbat Ends: Saturday, Jan. 1, 5:58 p.m.* Shabbat: Friday, Jan. 7, 4:58 p.m. Shabbat Ends: Saturday, Jan. 8, 6:04 p.m.* * Times according to Yeshiva Beth Yehudah calendar. (Cursing is closer to my view of it, however.) Is there a middle ground between being long suf- fering and having a short fuse? How many times have we found ourselves shift- ing gears between these two, depending on how our friends push us? Especially annoying can be the per- son who abhors the long way round and knows of a wonderful shortcut. Eons later, you may decide that his route was no way near a time saver — not by a long shot! You may even be tempted to tell him to take a long walk off a short pier. Why do young folk seem to think that anyone who is somewhat long in the tooth has to be short on brains?
