Attention
Campers:

Tamarack names
its new leader.

S

teve Engel has accepted the
position of executive director
of Oakland County-based
Tamarack Camps.
Frank Ellias, Tamarack Camps'
president, said: "Steve's significant
experience in the Jewish camping
and nonprofit world will guide him
in leading the agency to new levels of
achievement:'
Previously, Engel
spent 21 years at the
St. Louis JCC, serv-
ing as Camp Sabra
director and then
associate executive
director. Most recent-
ly, he completed his
M.B.A. at Fontbonne
Steve Engel
University in St.
Louis and was division president of the
National Kidney Foundation serving
Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska.
Engel grew up in Milwaukee. He
received his B.A. in philosophy and
communications from the University of
Wisconsin. He received his M.S.W. from
the University of Denver.
Engel's career began at the Denver
JCC as BBYO and overnight Ranch
Camp director. Eventually, he returned
to Milwaukee to be a part of his fami-
ly's business, but discovered he missed
the camping world, leading him to the
St. Louis JCC and Camp Sabra.
The importance of encouraging
young people to explore their Judaism
and to reach new heights has been a
significant part of Engel's career.
"I am very proud of the impact my
work has had on the lives of Jewish
youth:' he said. "Many have gone
on to positions of leadership in the
Jewish and camping world. Jewish
camping is not only about fun, it is
about building Jewish identity"
Engel and his wife, Tracie, have
two children, Robert, a junior at
the University of Wisconsin, and
Courtney, a senior in high school,
who literally grew up at camp.
Engel is excited to become a part of
the Tamarack Camps family.
"I'm especially looking forward to
meeting our campers, their families,
staff, alumni and all of the wonder-
ful people who have made Tamarack
Camps the premier Jewish camp in
the country," he said.

Talmudic Sage Hillel Is
Focus Of Beth Ahm Series
Congregation Beth Ahm invites lifelong
learners to hear Professor Howard N.
Lupovitch's three-part series "Hillel: If
Not Now, When?"
The lecture series
gets its title from a
new biography of
the talmudic sage
by Rabbi Joseph
Telushkin. Lupovitch
will use Telushkin's
book as a point of
departure to explore
Howard
Hillel's
world, life
Lupovitch
and rabbinic career
(Tuesday, Jan. 4); his relationship with
his colleague and intellectual sparring
partner Shammai (Tuesday, Jan. 11)
and the indelible imprint Hillel left on
Judaism (Wednesday, Jan. 19). Lectures
begin at 7:30 p.m. at Beth Ahm in West
Bloomfield. Each is self-contained and
can be attended independently.
Telushkin's thesis, which the lec-
ture series will address, is that Hillel's
influence has waned somewhat in
recent generations, as more stringent
"Shammai-like" attitudes have taken
hold and that this situation is problem-
atic for the Jewish people and the world
in general.
Tuition for the series is $40 — or
$15 per lecture. Advance registration is
encouraged but not required.
To pre-register call the Beth Ahm
office (248) 851-6880. For more infor-
mation about this and other lifelong
Jewish learning opportunities at Beth
Ahm, call Nancy Kaplan (248) 737-1931
or e-mail nancyellen879@att.net .
