hey picked up markers and went to work, drawing on
walls, cabinets and even the kitchen floor. About 85 JARC
supporters literally left their mark on one of the agency's
20 group homes, which is about to undergo an eco-friendly
makeover.
Participants of all ages also celebrated
the end of Chanukah during a unique
graffiti party Dec. 9 at the Shirley T.
Medow home on Roycourt in Huntington
Woods. The house, built in 1956, has been
used as a group home since 1982. Six
women live there with support from the
Farmington Hills-based nonprofit agency,
which serves people with developmental
disabilities.
"It was a perfect evening," said Joanne
Aronovitz of Huntington Woods. "It
brought together two things I care deeply
about: JARC and Huntington Woods!"
Aronovitz and her husband, Danny, co-chaired the fundrais-
ing campaign, which has raised more than $80,000 toward the
$100,000 goal for the project. Now that the kitchen is covered

with drawings and messages, it will be gutted and replaced with
a new barrier-free kitchen, high-efficiency appliances, lighting
and eco-friendly paint. The renovation will include new flooring,
a geothermal heating and cooling system, a new three-season
porch, a new roof and driveway repair. The focus of the construc-
tion plan is to meet the current and future needs of the women
who live there.
"We want to allow the ladies to age in place and be good stew-
ards of the environment," said JARC CEO Rick Loewenstein of
West Bloomfield. "With this renovation, we're reducing our oper-
ating costs and our carbon footprint. By saving dollars in energy
costs, we can put that money toward our programming."
Another party is scheduled for June to show off the renova-
tions and begin a landscaping effort. Spotted in the crowd
were: Lynn Medow of Bloomfield Hills; Emily Korotkin of
Birmingham; and Ralph, Adam and Dana McDowell, Cheryl
and Dan Guyer, Ron Elkus, Ben Falik, Rena Friedberg and
Beverly Kent-Goldenberg, all of Huntington Woods. Li
