nace and washer and dryer?
Windows serve multiple purposes of
providing light and ventilation when open,
and even egress. They come in different
shapes, sizes, styles and price ranges.
If you choose to build a bathroom, you
have to attach it to the sewer line and then
hope that the sewer is deep enough to
handle the additional waste.
Insulation and drywall are vital
ingredients to ensure the basement is
warm and dry, while ventilation systems
ensure a continued supply of fresh air.
Homeowners should get their basements
tested for radon, Halprin says, to prevent
major illness.
When it comes to wiring and light
fixtures, experts suggest installing new
wiring. Then you know it will power any
kind of light fixtures you choose. Lighting
becomes doubly important if the base-
ment does not have windows.
If you choose, you can install a separate
circuit breaker or electrical power box that
powers the basement alone. This allows
you to manage the electricity separately.

You can kill two birds with one stone by
using decorative ceiling materials to cover
up exposed wiring and pipes.
The experts warn homeowners to avoid
fluorescent lights or CFL bulbs. They give
off light that does not suit a basement
environment. Instead, buy incandescent
lights that project a warm feeling.
A great way, perhaps the best way, to
lighten the environment is an old-fash-
ioned fresh coat of paint, emphasizing
warm or bright colors.
Ceramic or porcelain tile are popular
flooring choices because of their durabil-
ity and the variety of finishes and colors
available.
Carpeting also works well, the experts
say, notably olefin. It fights off the worst
elements of the basement — dampness,
mold and mildew. These are a health haz-
ard, as well as an odor issue.
An olefin carpet can be cleaned with
strong detergents and cleaners, even
bleach, if necessary. The cleaners will not
harm the carpet because it is made entire-
ly of synthetic fibers.
