A s Geoffrey Goldberg travels the country on tour with Mary Poppins, he photographs at least three places at each stop — the theater where the show is playing, an independent bookstore and a coffee shop. While the family musical runs Dec. 16-Jan. 2 at the Detroit Opera House, Goldberg, the dance captain, will be scouting city and suburbs for appropri- ate sites in the last two categories. "I take a picture of each theater from the stage; says Goldberg, 27, who rates Mary Poppins his favorite show."It's a special picture because not many people get to see the view from the stage. "I'm driving my own car for this tour and like to take photos of bookstores and coffee shops because they are two places where I love to go. It's fun to learn about a city by discovering the kinds of bookstores it has. In a coffee shop, I can sit and relax and watch people." Goldberg, who also takes professional portraits for actors and conducts master classes, has been with the Mary Poppins North American tour since rehearsals started in January 2009. The show, based on P.L. Travers' stories and the 1964 Walt Disney film, features the Academy Award-winning music as it depicts the now legendary nanny. "I'm responsible for keeping the origi- nal choreography, and I'm also respon- sible for training new people who join our cast',' Goldberg says. "I hold rehearsals and work as a swing, which means I cover all the male ensemble parts as well as stay prepared to understudy. That's a challenge, but it also keeps the show fresh for me:" Goldberg started tap dancing les- sons when he was 6 and living outside Philadelphia. His favorite song in the show is "Feed the Birds." "It's beautiful with a haunting tune and the message that it only takes a tiny act to change the world:' explains Goldberg, who had a bar mitzvah, was confirmed and taught religious school classes.
