Michael Serling of Birmingham
received the Michigan State University
Philanthropist Award for 2010 at the
Alumni Association Grand Awards
Dinner Oct. 14 on the MSU cam-
pus. Michael and his wife, Elaine,
have supported the Jewish Studies
Program at Michigan State for many
years, including the endowment of an
Israel Studies Chair, held by Professor
Yael Aronoff. Michael serves as
president of the MSU Jewish Studies
Advisory Board. He received the MSU
Distinguished Alumni Award in 2004.

the Distinguished
Alumni Award.
Rival
For many years,
Rival was clinical
associate professor of medicine at
the University of Michigan, which
presented him its Outstanding
Teacher Award (1994). He served
as governor of the Michigan
Chapter of the American College of
Physicians (ACP), which presented
him its Laureate Award and Lifetime
Achievement Award. This year, the
ACP elected him to mastership, the
highest honor bestowed on members
of the college. He is a fellow in the
American College of Cardiology.
