Thanks To Our Soldiers
FARMINGTON HILLS -- While we were
home enjoying lathes, dreidels and light-
ing our menorahs, it was nice to remem-
ber the thousands of Jewish Americans
serving our country, many in harm's way
on bases in Afghanistan, Iraq and Korea,
and many more serving in Japan, Kuwait,
Turkey and Germany.
Again this year, their Chanukah spirits
were brighter thanks to students at Adat
Shalom Synagogue's Religious School.
They sent hundreds of Happy Chanukah
cards to Jewish chaplains on U.S. bases
around the world; thanks to Wells Fargo
Advisors in Farmington Hills, each greet-
ing card was accompanied by a "Cell
Phones for Soldiers" phone card loaded
with 60 minutes of calling time.

Israel Bridge
Builder
ANN ARBOR -- An
experienced executive
with background in
various Jewish organiza-
tions and the founder
Pam Lippitt
and operator of her own
business for 25 years has been named the
new executive director of the Michigan
Israel Business Bridge. MIBB facilitates
business and investments between
Michigan and Israel for their mutual eco-
nomic benefit.
Pamela B. Lippitt of Southfield comes to
the MIBB having most recently served as
executive director of the Zionist Organization
of America for the Michigan Region. In 1986,
she opened Mail-Eze, a direct mail services
business, which continues today.
"Pam is a great addition to our team of
people engaged in the MIBB and working
with Israeli and Michigan-based companies
to help build new markets and grow busi-
nesses',' said Chuck Newman, chairman
of ReCellular, the world's leading collector,
reseller and recycler of used cell phones
and accessories. He is founder of the MIBB
along with Susan Herman of Lansing.
MIBB has organized and run seven
trade missions to Israel. It is one of several
Israeli bridge organizations in the United
States that foster trade between Israel's
substantial high-tech workforce and the
desire to expand into manufacturing,
development and distribution in the U. S.
"My community involvement and
leadership in numerous Jewish and other
groups can be a solid benefit for the MIBB
as we move into a new phase of growth for
the businesses we serve in Israel and the
Michigan region:' Lippitt said.

Jews And The Wall
WASHINGTON (JTA) -- The Obama
administration condemned a Palestinian
Authority paper that denies any Jewish
connection to the Western Wall.
"Regarding a claim by a senior
Palestinian official that the Western Wall
is an Islamic Waqf, we strongly condemn
these comments and fully reject them as
factually incorrect, insensitive and highly
provocative State Department spokes-
man P.J. Crowley said last week. "We have
repeatedly raised with the Palestinian
Authority leadership the need to consis-
tently combat all forms of delegitimization
of Israel, including denying historic Jewish
connections to the land:'
The report was not on the P.A.'s official
website on Dec. 1, the Associated Press
reported. Its author, Al-Mutawakil Taha, a
civil servant in the Information Ministry,
told the AP that he stands by his report,
which says the Western Wall was never a
part of the Temple Mount complex.
"This wall was never part of the so-
called Temple Mount, but Muslim toler-
ance allowed the Jews to stand in front of
it and weep over its destruction:' he wrote.
Multiple Jewish groups and members
of Congress have slammed the Palestinian
Authority for the paper, which appeared
on the P.A. website two weeks ago signed
by a senior Ministry of Information offi-
cial.
"We are deeply concerned that the
Palestinian study dismissed a Jewish
connection to the Western Wall:' said
Dr. Conrad Giles of Bloomfield Hills and
Rabbi Steve Gutow, the chairman and
president, respectively, of the Jewish
Council for Public Affairs, the national
umbrella for Jewish policy groups.
"We intend to share with Palestinian

leaders our worry that this study could
resurrect a false narrative that Jews have
no connection to the land and could reig-
nite ugly religious battles over free wor-
ship and access:'
Other groups condemning the paper
include the Orthodox Union (OU),
B'nai B'rith International, the Zionist
Organization of America and J Street.
The OU, which was the first group to
condemn the paper, praised the Obama
administration for speaking out.
U.S. Rep. Howard Berman, D-Calif., the
outgoing chairman of the Foreign Affairs
Committee, also has condemned the paper.
The Western Wall's origins as the outer
wall of the Jewish Second Temple are
grounded in archaeological evidence and
in contemporary descriptions.

Child Nutrition Law
WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Jewish groups
praised the renewal of a law funding
school meals, but expressed concern that
it was financed in part by money desig-
nated for food stamps.
The Dec. 1 approval in the U.S. House of
Representatives of the Healthy Hunger Free
Kids Act means the bill, which had been
subject to some last-minute wrangling, is
ready for enactment by President Obama.
The bill extends for another 10 years
funding for school lunches and breakfasts
for children from families that depend on
the meals — 4.2 million households.
The passage is an important achieve-
ment that will improve the lives of mil-
lions of children:' said Rabbi Steve Gutow,
president of the Jewish Council for Public
Affairs. "This bill is an acknowledgement
that in a nation as bountiful as ours, no
child should worry about when their next
meal will be
