"The reason we call it silent reflux is because there is no heartburn, which is the classic symptom for reflux." Treating heartburn typically involves lifestyle modifications and medications, most commonly proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). However, these medications recently came under fire when the Food and Drug Administration warned consumers about a possi- ble increased risk of hip, wrist and spine fractures with high doses or long-term use of the medications. Among the most commonly pre- scribed medications in the world, PPIs reduce stomach acid produc- tion, which is necessary for the proper absorption of calcium. "While medical treatment and changes in behavior can provide excellent control of symptoms in many patients, careful follow-up of patients with chronic reflux remains extremely important," says Dr. Rontal. "With some of the treatments available at Beaumont, the damage to the esophagus that is related to acid reflux can actually be reversed, reducing the long-term risk of cancer that is associated with chronic reflux." Surgeons in the center offer laparoscopic fundoplication, a minimally invasive procedure that helps to restore the valve that joins the esophagus with the stomach, thus keeping the acid from travel- ing to the throat or lungs. The center's surgeons also perform EsophyX, an incisionless reflux surgery that eliminates the basic cause of reflux. "Minimally invasive procedures can end the need for long-term drug therapy, eliminate nighttime cough and improve chronic lar- yngitis or asthma in patients with reflux," says Robert Jury, M.D., director of the center and a gastro- intestinal surgeon. ❑ as low as 2%*!
