Rabbi Yossi Lebovics, who is also a cantor and principal of the Chaya Aydel Seminary in Hallandale, Fla., presented "The Star-Spangled Banner" on Dec. 1 prior to the Heat-Pistons game at the American Airlines Arena. Nearly 5,000 Jewish fans showed up for the second annual heritage celebra- tion, which coincided with the first night of Chanukah. Former Heat all-star Alonzo Mourning, now the team's vice presi- dent of player development, helped philanthropist Guma Aguira light the shamash on a giant menorah at halftime. The lighting ceremony was followed by a concert featuring Dr. Laz and the Alonzo Sensations, a band Mourning comprised of spe- cial-needs students from a nearby school. Jewish Heritage Night has become a growing trend in professional sports, with basketball, baseball, hockey and soccer teams getting into the spirit nationwide. "Basketball is filled with physical giants; Chanukah is all about spiritual giants;' said Rabbi Pinny Andrusier of Chabad of Southwest Broward, one of the prime movers of the Heat event. Miami beat Detroit, 97-72. Hamas Honor Treaty? JERUSALEM (JTA) Hamas will honor a peace treaty with Israel if the results of a Palestinian referendum approve the deal, said the group's leader in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh. Haniyeh said during a Dec. 1 news conference in the Gaza Strip that Hamas would "accept a Palestinian state on the borders of 1967, with Jerusalem as its capital, the release of Palestinian prisoners and the resolu- tion of the issue of refugees:' Reuters reported. The admission runs counter to the llamas charter, which states that all of the land of Palestine, including what is now Israel, is a Muslim birthright and should not be ceded to Israel. The charter also calls for the destruction of Israel. "Hamas will respect the results (of a referendum) regardless of whether it differs with its ideology and principles:' Haniyeh said, adding that the referendum must include all Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank and abroad. Rabbi Wanted Over Molestation Charges NEW YORK (JTA) -- The former prin- cipal of a Brooklyn yeshivah, along with three of his sons, are wanted for molesting four of his children over 15 years. New York police are looking for Rabbi Gershon Kranczer, 58, and one of his sons, Asher, 21, who are believed to have fled to Israel, according to reports. SonTechezkel Kranczer, 24, turned himself in to the police on Dec. 2 and was released on bail, and a third son, 15, was arrested. The abuse reportedly came to light after one of the daughters, 20, told a co-worker at the yeshivah where she works as a teachers' aide that the rabbi had been molesting her for 15 years, the New York Daily News reported. Gershon Kranczer and his three sons are accused of sexually abusing the four sisters — ages 20, 19, 17 and 8 — numerous times in the past few years. Gershon Kranczer is the former head of Yeshiva Tehila L'Dovid, which serves children with special needs. He and his wife have 14 children aged 10 to 28. New York City children's services officials reportedly removed the minor children from the home. Answering Israel's Critics The Charge In recent days, both the Syrian foreign minister and the Lebanese prime minister have publicly accused Israel of not being com- mitted to peace. The Answer It is interesting that the charge comes from two countries that have no relations, treaties or negotiations with Israel, and stood silent when Egypt and Jordan made peace with Israel a couple decades ago. - Allan Gale Jewish Community Relations Council of Metropolitan Detroit © Jewish Renaissance Media • December 9, 2010
