ust a bit of Shabbat will
be brought into the fam-
ily Chanukah celebration
planned Sunday, Dec. 5, by Temple
Israel in West Bloomfield. In the
midst of the Mama Doni Band
performing songs from the CD
Chanukah Fever, the group will
include a selection from next year's
CD, Shabbat Shaboom.
Festivities start at 12:15 p.m. with a
latke lunch before moving into sing-
ing, dancing and surprises at 1 p.m.
"This will be an interactive rock
concert for kids and their families,
and it's going to have music all about
Chanukah," says Mama Doni (Doni
Zasloff Thomas), a songwriter, lead
singer in the Mama Doni Band and
mother of two.
"The music will range from disco
to reggae to pop, and the goal is for
everyone to feel the spirit by singing
and dancing. I always have kids and
parents up on stage, and I do give-
aways. We have a prize break where
we give away CDs and Chanukah
gelt."
Among the recorded "13 Macca-
beats" are "Latke Man,""The Funky
Gold Menorah," "Eight" and "La Vida
Dreidel." Also appearing in the group
are Eric Lindberg on guitar, Alex
Tyshkov on bass and Cliff Ramsey on
drums.
"I'm really interested in sharing
the joy of Jewish culture and helping
people connect to their own Jewish
identity in whatever ways make them
feel comfortable," says Mama Doni,
who attends a Reconstructionist syn-
agogue and likes to make all kinds of
latkes, including carrot and chocolate.
"I'm a big music lover and music
person, and I try to give different
genres of music a twist of Jewish
culture. I wanted to sing funky Jewish
songs with kids but couldn't find the

kind I envisioned so I thought I'd try
to write them myself:'
Mama Doni, who holds a degree in
educational theater from New York
University, won the 2008 Simcha
Award for inspiring joy through
music at the International Jewish
Music Festival in Amsterdam.
Her music recording and perform-
ing career started after Mama Doni,
who has taught religion and worked
as creative director of a children's
entertainment company, was asked
to become the music teacher at the
preschool attended by her daughter,
Millie, 6.
She started researching music
before venturing out with her own
projects.
"I started writing lyrics incessant-
ly," says the entertainer, whose I Love
Purim is among her earlier record-
ings. "I play minimal guitar, but an
explosion of melodies and harmonies
came to me. I composed in my mind
and found somebody to help me."
Mama Doni, married to a lawyer
and also the mother of 5-year-old
Alexander, remembers an earlier
visit to Michigan to watch her sister,
Joanna Zasloff, graduate from the
University of Michigan. Mama Doni
brought along her daughter, then only
6 weeks old.
"I'm working on a musical cook-
book," says the entertainer, who
stopped revealing her age at 32, "but
one of the coolest things about my
work is making spiritual connec-
tions." Fi
