BackStage Pass

Teens chosen for new
leadership program.

B

eginning January 2011, an
exclusive group of 21 Jewish
teenagers from across Metro
Detroit will start a four-year leader-
ship and intern program. BackStage
Pass (BSP), a program of Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's
CommunityNEXT, is funded
through a grant from the Stephen
H. Schulman Youth Group Initiative
Fund. BSP is dedicated to developing
and retaining the next generation of
Jewish leaders in Michigan.
In its inaugural year, BSP will
engage participants in quarterly
one-day social, cultural and profes-
sional events that expose them to
elements of the Jewish and Metro
Detroit communities they otherwise
could not access. Aside from these
programming days, an interac-
tive online community will be the
group's home to communicate and
share their day-to-day interactions
and assignments. The program runs
from a student's junior year in high
school through their sophomore
year in college.
BackStage Pass grew out of the
vision of Arthur Siegal, an attor-
ney at Jaffe Raitt Heuer & Weiss
in Southfield, who saw the need
to engage Jewish youth at a much
younger age.
"During my work with BBYO, I
confirmed how little our teenagers
know about what's going on in the
greater community; they hear the
message that nothing is going on
in Detroit, a message that teens in
other cities aren't getting about their
hometowns," said Siegal, chairperson
of BackStage Pass.
"I thought it would be great if we
could take a diverse group of teens
to experience some of the amazing
things that are happening here and
provide them with the opportunity
to meet community leaders who are
committed to our future."
BSP's kickoff will be an overnight
Saturday, Jan. 22, at BBYO's Bittker
Center in Ortonville. Future pro-
gramming days include an exclusive
look into Michigan industries such
as technology, social media, film and
entertainment, real estate, medicine

"BackStage Pass is a chance to
gather together future leaders of
our local Jewish community to
show them that Detroit has poten-
tial — and that they are part of
it:' said Rabbi Joshua Bennett of
Temple Israel in West Bloomfield.
"By offering them a glimpse of what
is possible, they make that potential
a reality. In the long term, this can
only strengthen our Jewish commu-
nity on many levels."
At the end of the fourth year, each
student is guaranteed an intern-
ship opportunity. Already secured
are 30-plus local businessmen and
entrepreneurs who have agreed to
act as captains/mentors, and are
excited to take BSP interns into their
offices.
"What's important about BSP is
that immediately the teens will be
making one-on-one connections
and, in four or five years, we will be
able to make the investment case to
college graduates:' said Jordan Wolfe,
CommunityNEXT director. "By
then, the hope is that they will seri-
ously consider rooting themselves in
Michigan."
