Wednesday Program To
Explore Campus Hate
BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP -- Deans and
representatives from Oakland University,
the University of Michigan and Michigan
State University will participate in a com-
munity forum next Wednesday evening.
The topic is campus anti-Semitism and
the U.S. Department of Education's appli-
cation of Title VI Civil Rights laws to pro-
tect Jewish students.
Keynoting the 7:30 program on Dec.
8 will be Susan Tuchman, director of
the Zionist Organization of America's
Center for Law and Justice. She'll speak

on ensuring that our nation's civil rights
laws are vigorously enforced to protect
Jewish students from harassment, intimi-
dation, discrimination and bias. She will
brief the college administrators on the
enforcement responsibilities stemming
from the Department of Education's new
guidelines.
The university deans and represen-
tatives will address what policies and
protocols are currently in place and what
changes are contemplated to conform to
the new standards recently issued by the
Department of Education safeguarding
Jewish students.

"We at the ZOA/Michigan Region are
delighted that our public universities with
significant Jewish enrollment, alumni
networks and philanthropic support were
so responsive to our invitation and will be
joining us at the program to explain how
they will deal with these issues on their
campus:' said ZOA Michigan president
Eugene Greenstein.
He urges current and prospective col-
lege students and their families attend.
"It is crucial that we as a community
are up to speed on all the mechanisms
available to ensure our students are
afforded the same protections in aca-

WikiLeaks
Release
JERUSALEM (JTA) --
The secret documents
released by WildLeaks
will not negatively affect
Israel, Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu
Benjamin
said.
Netanyahu
Israeli leaders can feel
comfortable with what was revealed in
the first batch of documents made public
Sunday, Netanyahu said, because there is
very little difference between what they
said in private discussions with United
States leaders and what they told their
citizens.
"Usually there is a gap between what is
said in public and what is said in private,
but regarding Israel, this gap is not large
he said. "Regarding other countries, the
gaps are extremely large
The documents did show that what
many Arab leaders said privately and
publicly, particularly on the subject of
Iran, was significantly different. For
example, many Arab leaders called on the
United States, in some cases repeatedly,
to attack Iran.
"More and more countries realize that
Iran is the central threat, but the countries
in the region have a gap because they
publicly are attached to the Israeli-Arab
conflict, but privately they realize that this
narrative is not true: Netanyahu said dur-
ing a speech before an editors' conference
in Tel Aviv. "They realize that the central
threat is from Iran and now this has been
revealed even though it was known.
"It can eliminate the theory that Israel
is the obstacle to peace and show that we
have mutual interests."
The United States briefed several of its
allies on the documents over the week-
end. Israel had been told by the U.S. last
week that it could be mentioned in the
release of classified U.S. documents.
The WikiLeaks website, which publish-

es classified documents from anonymous
sources and leaks, released about 250,000
secret diplomatic cables.
Netanyahu said he was not told in
advance the specifics of what was said in
the documents.
State Department legal adviser Harold
Koh released a letter to WildLeaks found-
er Julian Assange saying that the pub-
lication of the documents is illegal and
demanding a halt to their publication.
The publication of the documents will
"place at risk the lives of countless inno-
cent individuals;' "place at risk on-going
military operations" and "place at risk
on-going cooperation between countries:'
the letter said.
The letter called on WildLeaks to
return the documents to the United
States and destroy any copies.

Iran immediately blamed the CIA and
the Mossad — the intelligence agencies
for the United States and Israel — for the
bombing attacks, which reportedly were
carried out by men on motorcycles.
Iranian state television blamed "Zionist
agents:' according to reports.
Majid Shahriari, who was killed, and
Fereydoon Abbasi Davani, who was
injured in the attacks, were physics
lecturers at Tehran's Shahid Beheshti
University; the attacks took place near
the university. The scientists were senior
figures in Iran's nuclear program, accord-
ing to reports.
"The Zionist regime this time shed
the blood of university professor Dr.
Majid Shahriari to curb Iran's prog-
ress," the office of President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad said in a statement posted
on its website, according to the French
news agency AFP.
Shahriari reportedly was working on a
nuclear project for Iran's Atomic Energy
Agency.
The attacks come just days after Iran
said its first nuclear plant was fully
loaded with fuel rods and awaiting sev-
eral tests before going online for the first
time.

East Jerusalem Rezoning
JERUSALEM (JTA) -- A Jerusalem
municipal building committee approved
the rezoning of eastern Jerusalem land
for the construction of 130 housing units.
The land between the Jerusalem neigh-
borhoods of Gilo and Beit Safafa was
previously zoned for hotels.
The Jerusalem Local Planning and
Building Committee officially changed
the zoning Monday.
The plan had been removed from the
committee's agenda earlier this month
in advance of a meeting in New York
between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu and U.S. Secretary of State
Hillary Rodham Clinton.
The city is suffering from a shortage of
hotel rooms, according to reports.

Iran Accuses Israel
TEHRAN (JTA) -- Iran has accused Israel
of attacks on two Iranian nuclear scien-
tists.
One of the scientists was killed and
another injured Monday in two separate
attacks in Tehran. The government of

Ancient Roman Bathhouse
JERUSALEM (JTA) -- An 1,800-year-old
bathing pool was discovered in exca-
vations prior to the construction of a
men's mikveh in the Jewish Quarter of
Jerusalem.
The pool was part of a bathhouse used
by the Tenth Legion, the Roman sol-
diers who destroyed the Second Temple,
according to the Israel Antiquities
Authority.
The bathhouse tiles were stamped with
the symbols of the Tenth Legion, which
was garrisoned in Jerusalem while the
pagan city of Aelia Capotilina was built
on the ruins of Jerusalem.
"Another interesting discovery that

demia as all other minorities': he said.
Following the presentations, the speak-
ers will entertain questions from the
audience on the subject of campus anti-
Semitism and anti-Zionism.
The free program is co-sponsored by
the ZOA, StandWithUs-Michigan and
Temple Beth El's Chai Committee. It is
the second in a series of ZOA community
education presentations examining the
rise in anti-Semitism on college cam-
puses. For reservations, call the local ZOA
office: (248) 282-0088.

caused excitement during the excavation
is the paw print of a dog that probably
belonged to one of the soldiers:' said Ofer
Sion, excavation director on behalf of the
Israel Antiquities Authority. "The paw
print was impressed on the symbol of
the legion on one of the roof tiles; and it
could have happened accidentally or have
been intended as a joke
It was the first discovery of a building
that belonged to the Roman Legion, the
antiquities authority said. The remains
of the ancient Roman bathhouse will be
integrated in the new mikvah to be built
in the Jewish Quarter.

Israeli Detention Facility
JERUSALEM (JTA) Israel's Cabinet
approved a plan to build a detention
center for illegal migrants who infiltrate
Israel's southern border.
The facility will accommodate infiltra-
tors who enter Israel illegally and cannot
be deported to their country of origin. It
will provide the illegals with basic necessi-
ties according to international standards, a
statement from the Prime Minister's Office
said.
In 2009, an average of approximately
300 infiltrators entered Israel per month,
according to the Prime Minister's Office.
The average thus far this year is 1,200 to
1,500 infiltrators per month. Approximately
35,000 illegal infiltrators have entered Israel
in recent years.
Most of the infiltrators are economic
migrants seeking work. In one Population
and Migration Administration check of
5,000 infiltrators, it was recommended that
only two of them receive refugee status.
"This growing wave threatens Israelis'
jobs, is changing the character of the coun-
try and we must stop it:' Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu said.
"We do not intend to arrest refugees
from war. We allow them to enter and will
continue to do so. But we must stop the
mass entry of illegal infiltrators who are
