Five Julie and Ed Levy Jr.
Scholarships of $3,000 each have
been awarded to Michigan State
University students to support
independent enrollment and study
in Israel during spring 2011. The
students are Orli Ginsburg (Ann
Arbor), studying honors psychol-
ogy and Hebrew at Haifa University;
Aaron Goss (West Bloomfield),
studying Jewish studies and Hebrew
at Hebrew University; Geoff Levin
(Wheeling, Ill.), studying peace
and conflict studies and Arabic at
Haifa University; Simon Stratford
(Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Katherine
Holland (West Bloomfield), studying
Jewish studies at Tel Aviv University.

The Farmington Hills-based Society
for Humanistic Judaism (SHJ) pre-
sented the 2010 Sherwin T. Wine
Lifetime Achievement Award to
Shari Gelber, of Newton, Mass.,
past president of the society and a
member of Kahal B'raira, the Boston
Congregation. Gelber joined the
society board of directors in 1995;
by 1997, she was on the executive
committee. SHJ Rabbi Miriam Jerris,
in presenting the award, said, "Shari
Gelber models ethical volunteerism,
encouraging others to fulfill the
responsibilities they have accepted?'

Alan Finkelstein,
a former Detroiter
of Cherry Hill, N.J.,
participated in a
special bike ride
in Israel to help
raise money for
the
Arava Institute
Finkelstein
of Environmental
Studies. Starting in Jerusalem and
ending in Eilat, the 280-mile ride
took five days to complete, with stops
in Ashkelon, Mashabei Sade, Mitzpe
Ramon and Kibbutz Ketura in the
Negev Dessert.

The Jewish Historical Society of
Michigan appointed Wendy Rose
Bice as associae director. In addition
to her continuing responsibilities as
editor of Michigan Jewish History,
Rose Bice will provide management
and marketing expertise to the
JHSM. She has operated Rose Public
Relations since 1990, has authored
two local history books and has writ-
ten for several magazines. She joins
director Aimee Ergas in leading the
Oakland County-based JHSM (www.
michjewishhistory.org ).
