Jump start the holiday season with the show that's fired up to the next level... RAISING AND BREAKING THE SOUND BARRIER! DETROIT TOO Books from page 51 For the Design Maven Legendary entertainer Barbra Streisand is out with her first book, My Passion for Design (Viking; $60), in which she reveals another aspect of her talent — the taste and style that have inspired her beautiful homes and collections. Here, utilizing her own gorgeous photos and an engaging writing style, she focuses on the architec- ture and construction of her dream home on the California coast while reflecting on her love for American architecture and design between the 18th and 20th centu- ries, her thoughts behind the decoration of each room, the furniture and art she has collected and the stunning gardens on the property "Let me tell you, it's much easier to make a film!" she writes. For the Foodie Gil Marks' Encyclopedia of Jewish Food (Wiley; $40) explores the food and culinary traditions of individual com- munities (like Tuscany's honey-nut sfratto cookies) as well as those that unite Jews everywhere (the Passover seder plate). Alphabetical book entries present recipes, ingredients and holidays that are signifi- cant to the story of Jewish food over 3,000 years. For the Magic Fan Houdini: Art and Magic (Yale University Press; $39.95), by Brooke Kamin Rappaport, is the companion catalogue to the exhibit of the same name running through March 27, 2011, at the Jewish Museum in New York City, in which contemporary art from the 1970s is inte- grated with historic objects to examine how Houdini, the son of a rabbi, served as an inspiration for a significant number of artists. The catalogue, with 157 color and 45 black-and-white illustrations, contains additional essays about Houdini — who died in Detroit on Halloween 1926 — from historians as well as interviews with performing and fine artists. For the Nostalgic The Man Behind the Nose: Assassins, Astronauts, Cannibals and Other Stupendous Tales (Igniter Books$25.99), written by Larry"Bozo" Harmon shortly before his death in 2008, is a memoir full of stories about the life of the Toledo-born Jewish-American who entertained gen- erations as Bozo the Clown. For the Photography Fan Drool over the cover shot of Paul Newman, bare-chested and wearing a Star of David, on the film set of Exodus. Leo Fuchs: Special Photographer From the Golden Age of Hollywood (Powerhouse Books; $65), authored by the photogra- pher, collects Fuchs' greatest snapshots and his memories, revealing icons out of the glare of the spotlight on film sets that include To Kill a Mockingbird. For the Mystery Lover Blood Count: An Artie Cohen Mystery (Walker & Co; $26) is author Barbara Nadelson's ninth book featuring the Russian-Jewish cop, this one set in the Harlem neighborhood of Sugar Hill, where race, real estate and money collide shortly after the 2008 election of Barack Obama. The latest entry in another popular series, Faye Kellerman's Hangman: A Decker/Lazarus Novel (William Morrow; $25.99), catches up with the Orthodox sleuthing couple and the chill- ing return of a familiar sociopath. For the Dylan-ologist Greil Marcus' Bob Dylan: Writings (Public Affairs; $29.95) is an anthology of the author's essays — written over more than 40 years — that chronicles the musi- cian's ups and downs. For another take on the former Robert Zimmerman, see Bob Dylan: The Brazil Series (Prestel; $49.95), by John Elderfield and Kaspar Monrad, who introduce readers to Dylan's long-term interest in drawing and painting, trace elements of that passion within his musical career and offer an analysis of his latest paintings, which capture many facets of Brazilian life. For the Art Lover In the oversized and beautifully illustrated Frida Kahlo: Face to Face (Prestel; $65), feminist artist Judy Chicago (born Judy Cohen) and art historian Frances Borzello hand-pick and have a conversation about 100 Kahlo portraits that speak to the full spectrum of women's experience. In addition, essays explore Kahlo's many facets: woman, artist, historical figure and inspiration. For Children and Teens Save yourself some time browsing at the bookstore. In the just-released JPS Guide: Best Jewish Books for Children and Teens (Jewish Publication Society; $20), Linda R. Silver has selected titles that represent the best in writing, illustration, reader appeal and Jewish content — in picture books, fiction and nonfiction — for readers from early childhood through the high-school years. Each entry is cat- egorized by subject, with a description of the book and author and Silver's insights on what makes it worth reading.
