I World Stepping Out Capitol Steps sing post-election satire at ADL's annual dinner. 0 n the heels of the midterm elections, the Anti-Defamation League celebrated its fall fun- draiser by entertaining its sup- porters with the well-known Washington, D.C.-based Capitol Steps, a political satire group performing since 1981. About 300 people gathered Nov. 4 at Knollwood Country Club in West Bloomfield for ADL's annual fall fundraiser, complete with dinner and des- sert. Originally made up exclu- sively of congressional staff- ers, the Capitol Steps is now a professional troupe. They have released about 30 albums con- sisting of song parodies. At the event, they sang about airport security, the midterm elections, Tea Partiers, President Obama, and former Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin. Monies raised will help the ADL with community program- ming, including security issues like the recent influx of ter- rorist-related packages aboard U.S.-bound planes, combatting cyber bullying in middle and high schools and the newest initiative, No Place for Hate, an ADL program offered at no cost to schools across Michigan. The program is a model for reducing intolerance, bullying and name calling and creating a more inclusive learning environment. Seen in the crowd were Jay Hack of Royal Oak, Dan and Deb Levy of West Bloomfield, John and State Sen. Gilda Jacob of Huntington Woods, Detroit City Council President Charles Pugh, Earle and Beth Erman as well as Jon Aaron, all of Bloomfield Hills. ❑ Attending the ADL event are Melissa Antokal and Jason Gumenick, both of Ann Arbor, Mike Chosid of Detroit and Megan Ingber of Detroit. At the dinner are host Renee Laker of West Bloomfield, Betsy Kellman, regional ADL director, Elaine Sturman, regional ADL board chair, and her husband, Dr. Stephen Sturman of Bloomfield Hills.
