New York's Lower East Side around the turn --MIKES REVIEWS of the twentieth century, as told through the experiences of five families, all of them residents of 97 Orchard Street. 'SPARK' from page 5 "Ziegelman dishes delectable morsels of ethnic gastronomy." • -- I; 1," Michigan Life Science Innovation Center Located on Beck Road in western Wayne County, this business incuba- tor is a collaborative effort involving SPARK, Wayne County, the Detroit- based New Economy Initiative, the Michigan Pre-Seed Capital Fund and others throughout Southeastern Michigan. It connects seasoned entrepreneurs in the life sciences with business accelerator organizations and startups. For those in the Jewish community who are familiar with Wayne State University's TechTown, this is a similar model, providing an array of attractive economic and non-economic benefits. The innovation center is an example of the "open source" concept that SPARK is utilizing to extend its reach and impact throughout the region. Representatives of our Jewish commu- nity should be plugged into the growth of this incubator and include it as part of our narrative about opportunities for entrepreneurs looking to start and grow their businesses in Southeastern Michigan. Every Day Job Czar SPARK'S successful and growing model of matching current and antici- pated employer needs with talent is the primary responsibility of Amy Cell, its vice president of talent enhance- ment. According to its marketing VP Parkinson, Cell "wakes up every day trying to figure out what companies are hiring, when they are hiring and who is looking for work — a supply and demand equation." Parkinson says that Cell's constant outreach has pulled together a broad coalition, including university representatives, business leaders and job seekers who are continually focused on retaining and attracting talent for current and anticipated job openings. Through SPARK, Governor-Elect Snyder offers a window through which we see how he intends to transform Michigan's economy and job base. Through MichAGAIN and www. annarborusa.org, we see creative and proactive efforts at matching employ- ers with talent inside or outside of Michigan. Through the Michigan Life Science Innovation Center, we see an example of "open source" sharing of resources and expertise that will continue to spread through Oakland County and the rest of Southeastern Michigan. Through Amy Cell, we see the value and importance of a "job czar:' some- one who eats, sleeps and breathes jobs and job creation every day. For our Southeastern Michigan Jewish community to survive, revive and thrive, it must maximize opportu- nities for job creation, leave no stone unturned in identifying existing open- ings even if those opportunities and openings are in "far away" Ann Arbor, and hire a community "job czar" who reports directly to Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit CEO Scott Kaufman. Governor-Elect Snyder and SPARK are showing us a way to move Michigan forward with innovative thinking and doing. As a Jewish com- munity, we must expect no less from our own leaders and organizations.
