Akiva goes all out to promote awareness of breast cancer.

by Jamie Rashty

n Oct. 28, students arrived at Akiva Hebrew

all over the world, and Educational Director Chaye Kohl

Day School in Southfield with an uplifting sense
of motivation and determined energy to pro-
mote awareness of breast cancer, which kills more than
400,000 people each year in the United States.
Being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Akiva par-
ents Jill Greenbaum, Yehudit Jubas, Rose Brystowsky
and Laurie Goldmeier organized Akiva Goes Pink!, a
special day dedicated to breast cancer awareness. With
pink streamers hanging from the ceilings and taped over
every wall, the school was almost unrecognizable as stu-
dents entered the school dressed in pink clothing.
In prayer that morning, Akiva students in grades 6-12
said an additional blessing dedicated to cancer victims

gave a dvar Torah.
The students also viewed a video on the life-changing
organization, Sharsheret, a New Jersey-based nonprofit
that supports Jewish women with breast cancer. Team
Shasheret participated in the first Susan G. Komen Race
for the Cure walk in Israel that same day. Proceeds col-
lected in four beautifully designed tzedakah boxes by
10th-grader Chaviva Bluth will go to Sharsheret.
Following the video, high school and middle school
students as well as Akiva faculty, parents and 46th District
Court Judge Bill Richardson of Southfield walked for the
cause along 12 Mile Road and back to Akiva for a total
