Gail Zimmerman 1 Gift Guide Editor W hat's a "Gleek," you ask? A fervid fan of Glee, the musical-comedy television series about New Directions, a fic- tional high-school show choir in Lima, Ohio, now in its second season on FOX and probably the most openly Jewish show on television. New Directions is populated by outsiders, including at least two Jewish members: The club's shin- ing star, Rachel Berry, adopted and being raised by two dads, is totally driven to make a career for herself on Broadway. Noah "Puck" Puckerman — a Mohawk-wearing, football-playing "bad boy" who at one point dated Rachel at his mother's urging to be with a Jewish girl (when they break up, Puck claims he feels like "a bad Jew") — has recalled his annual screening of Schindler's List, while ironically eating sweet and sour pork from a Chinese take- out restaurant. Then there's the massively curly- headed (and somewhat creepy) Jacob Ben Israel, the Jewish editor of the school newspaper, who has a huge crush on Rachel, claiming she has a lust for "Jew-fros" (his affections are not returned). We don't yet know the ethnic background of Artie Abrams, the somewhat "nerdy" wheelchair-bound paraplegic with the great voice, or that of Tina Cohen-Chang, an Asian girl with a possible Jewish mother. In real life, Jewish actors populate the show as well. Lea Michele (Rachel) grew up with a Sephardic Jewish father and an Italian-Catholic mother, celebrating both their holidays. Dianna Agron, who was a bat mitzvah, plays cheer- leading captain Quinn Fabray and has commented on the irony of her play- ing a devout Christian and rival to the Jewish Rachel. In recurring roles, Jessalyn Gilsig plays the ex-wife of New Directions coach Will Schuester, and Victor Garber plays Will's father. Stephen Tobolowsky plays the former head of the New Directions, while Idina Menzel plays the coach of a rival glee club; she was revealed to be Rachel's biological mother. (Speaking of mothers, legendary performer Carol Burnett is slated to play cheerlead- ing coach/glee club arch-nemesis Sue Sylvester's "famous Nazi hunter" mother later this season.) Now the good news: If you have a Nintendo Wii videogame console at home (or are looking for a good rea- son to purchase one), Wii. here comes Karaoke Revolution: Glee, a newly released video- game from Konami, in partnership with Twentieth Century Fox. Exclusive to Wii and with a suggested retail price of $59.95, it comes bundled with a microphone and offers fans a way to interact with and relive the story arcs and songs of the first season of the show. The game features 30 original chart-topping musical numbers and performances, including "Don't Stop Believin',""Somebody to Love"Gold Digger,""No Air;' "Proud Mary" and more. In story mode, players can perform alongside their favorite Glee char- acters appearing on the screen. Or perform as a soloist in single player mode and in harmonies or as a duet in multiplayer singing games. Special voice recognition technology, which accurately recognizes and scores vocal pitch and rhythm, will help gamers reach hard-hitting notes and perfect their harmonies. Additionally, unlockable content will be available in a special game- play mode allowing players to access memorable show moments from sea- son one. As an added bonus, Karaoke Revolution: Glee offers exclusive songs and footage that have never been seen on television. ❑
