Israel doesn't object to the
Saudi sale, Alexander Vershbow,
assistant secretary of defense
for international security
affairs, said in October. Still, a
GOP House aide is quoted as
saying, "There are a lot of ques-
tions to be answered on this. If
Israel doesn't strongly object,
that doesn't mean it's not prob-
lematic."
The American-Israel Public
Affairs Committee has asked
its members to encourage their
congressmen to sign onto the
Berman-Ros-Lehtinen letter.
The Zionist Organization
of America has been a vocal
critic of military assistance
to Saudi Arabia, including the
Joint Direct Attack Munitions
(JDAM) $20 billion sent under
the Bush administration.
At that time, ZOA National
President Morton Klein con-
demned the sale: "Saudi Arabia
has not behaved like a U.S.
ally that deserves this level of
support and friendship from
the United States. We should
not forget that Saudi Arabia is
not playing its part in fighting
regional terrorism because it
continues to disseminate its
extreme Wahhabi ideology in
mosques around the world.
"Nor is it promoting Arab-
Israeli peace. The Saudi so-
called peace initiative demands
massive Israeli concessions
before the Arab states would
even take any steps to recognize
Israel and live in peace with
her."
And while the Saudis have
been credited with helping
international authorities inter-
dict the latest terror plot origi-
nating from Al Qaida in Yemen,
experts say it is the Saudis who
have fueled global terrorism.
In an article following news
of the most recent intercepted
bomb threat, the New York
Times noted that Saudi Arabia
has been forced to "wake up
to a reality it had long refused
to acknowledge. The puritani-
cal strain of Islam fostered by
the state, sometimes called
Wahhabism, was breeding
extremists who were willing
to kill even Muslims for their
cause ... Saudi Arabia's prob-
lem ... has become the world's
problem." L
'Biased'
ADL says Carter
stigmatizes Israel.
New York/JTA
F
ormer President Jimmy
Carter continues to make
biased remarks about Israel,
despite a public apology via JTA
late last year, according to the Anti-
Defamation League.
In an Op-Ed
distributed on Nov.
1, ADL National
Director Abe
Foxman charged,
"Rather than
focusing on Israel
as the only democ-
racy in the region,
Jimmy Carter
the one that pro-
tects individual rights, including for
women and gays, through the rule
of law and that has been under siege
from the Arab world since its birth,
Mr. Carter views the Jewish state
through the prism of Western guilt
for centuries of racism, colonialism
and supremacist ideas."
Carter, in a public apology pub-
lished last December by JTA, rued
his comments "stigmatizing Israel"
and implied that he would refrain
from such remarks in the future.
"In sum, by any objective mea-
surement, Mr. Carter has gone back
on his public word to the Jewish
community not to stigmatize the
Jewish state," Foxman wrote.
Foxman pointed to Carter's recent
visit to the Middle East with a del-
egation of The Elders in which "the
majority and intensity of his criti-
cisms ... were directed at Israel."
"I want to take Mr. Carter at his
word when he made his statement.
He may well have intended to apolo-
gize for the hurt he may have caused,
and he may really have believed that
he would in the future act differ-
ently," Foxman wrote in conclusion.
"The fact that he hasn't doesn't have
to signal disingenuousness as much
as how really difficult true atonement
is. It takes not only a statement of
commitment but, critically, a change
in one's thinking.
"Unfortunately, Mr. Carter's world-
view works against Israel and leads
to the bias we have seen time and
again:' Li
