Muslim-Jewish 'Twinning'
DETROIT (JTA) -- Free medical
screenings and a clean-up day were
part of a U.S. bridge-building group's
third season of Muslim-Jewish
"twinning" events.
Over the weekend, Jewish and
Muslim doctors in the Detroit area
joined under the auspices of their
respective umbrella bodies to pro-
vide medical screenings for the poor,
and in the Maryland suburbs of
Washington, mosque and synagogue
youth groups organized a clean-up
and mulching day.
The Foundation for Ethnic
Understanding said this year's events
will feature more than 100 mosques
and 100 synagogues. The events will
be held through the end of 2010.
Organized by the Council of
Islamic Organizations of Michigan
and the Jewish Community Relations
Council of Metropolitan Detroit,
Detroit's Interfaith Health Fair marks
the second joint effort by Detroit's
Jewish and Muslim communities,
which united when the JCRC wel-
comed Muslims to join them for
Mitzvah Day on Christmas Day 2009.

The health fair, held at the Muslim
Center Mosque and Community
Center in Detroit, targeted the work-
ing poor who do not qualify for
government-provided or other no-
or-low cost health care programs.
The Archdiocese of Detroit, Matrix
Human Services and other organiza-
tions recruited clients for the health
fair. Protocols were in place for refer-
rals and, if necessary, urgent treat-
ment. The clinic provided education
stations and informational literature.
Social workers assited with referrals
to direct service agencies.
The health fair also was a compo-
nent of "Fighting Poverty with Faith,"
a nationwide effort to redcue poverty
by 50 percent over the next 10 years,
co-chaired by the Jewish Council
for Public Affairs, Catholic Charities
USA and the National Council of
Churches in Christ.
The twinning events began on
the weekend of Oct. 31, when par-
ticipants from Israel and a number
of Muslim, European and North
American nations went online to
share information on Jewish-Muslim
activities.

Earlier Sunday, Anderson said she
would work to convince haredi Orthodox

proposed in the Knesset. The measure
has been held up in Israel's parliament
over the lawmakers' attempt to exclude
the shtreiml, a sable-trimmed hat worn

Anderson warned Monday dur-

a few years, Israel will have more than
100,000 African immigrants living
