Project Chessed, a program of Jewish Family Service of Metropolitan Detroit, has been named one of the nation's 50 most innovative Jewish nonprofits in Slingshot '09/10, a resource guide for Jewish innovation. Since 2005, Slingshot has iden- tifyied pathfinding and trailblazing organizations grappling with concerns in Jewish life such as identity, commu- nity, tradition and basic needs. Project Chessed was chosen by a panel of 36 foundation profession- als from across North America. This was its third consecutive year being featured in Slingshot. It was also the second consecutive year that Project Chessed was designated as one of only 10 organizations to receive a capac- ity building grant from the Slingshot Fund, a collective giving mechanism to support innovative Jewish life. The grant was announced by Slingshot investor Ariella Lis. Ariella, a native Detroiter, lives in Boston and frequently commutes to New York to take an active role in the Slingshot Leadership in Philanthropy Program. The citation reads, in part: "Project Chessed has been a miraculous part- nership among hundreds of doctors and hospitals, which is a completely new model for the uninsured ... This is the right thing to do until this country sees caring for all as a priority ... Slingshot hopes to highlight this model so that it is replicated all over the country." After the conference, Karen Sosnick Schoenberg, chair of the Project Chessed Advisory Council, said, "Slingshot exposes us to a vibrant fund- ing community, a valuable vehicle as we work to grow our capacity and take our programming to the next level." According to Will Schneider, the director of Slingshot, "2010 was the most competitive year that Slingshot has experienced. Not only are there a greater number of applicants each year, but the extent and complexity of each applicant's impact has increased. "In order to receive a grant from the Slingshot Fund, not only did these ten organizations have to pass the rigorous evaluation process to get into Slingshot '09/10, but were then vetted, interviewed, and analyzed by 30 next-generation members of the Slingshot Fund." www.sophias-restaurant.com www.BlueNileN11.corn 461.
