"Every couple of weeks, Sydney would emerge from her room and read me another chapter," said Joanne Roberts, her mom. "After hearing Railway to Death, I knew that her writing was more advanced than a typical 11-year- old." Roberts also knew at that moment, she would do whatever it took to get that book published. She worked with publisher Edward Shaw of Polymorph Publications in Clawson in a process that started with a handcrafted copy of the book made by Roberts, an art- ist. Both Shaw and editor Denise Jenkin worked closely with mother and daughter. The book is dedicat- ed to all the innocent people who lost their lives to Hitler. Today, Sydney is 13 and a published author. She is prob- ably relieved to have complet- ed her bat mitzvah at Temple Shir Shalom in West Bloomfield just last weekend. Now she looks forward to speaking about her book at Book Fair. ❑ THURSDAY, FRIDAY, Mon.,Tues., Wed., Fri.
