ore mail bombs like those that
were mailed to synagogues in
Chicago may be out there, a
top U.S. security official told American
news shows on Sunday.
John Brennan, the deputy national
security adviser, said there might be
more mail bombs like the two discov-
ered Oct. 29. He added that the potential
attacks are characteristic of Al Qaida in
the Arabian Peninsula.
"They are a dangerous group. They
are a determined group. They are still at
war with us and we are very much at war
with them',' Brennan told Meet the Press.
"They are going to
try to identify vulner-
abilities that might
exist in the system."
There have been
no reports about any
threats or suspicious
packages regarding
Jewish institutions in
ADL's Betsy
Metro Detroit. On Oct.
Kellman
23, however, Al Qaida
released a video by
its American-born
propagandist Adam Gadahn calling on
Metro Detroit Muslims to "strike the
leaders of unbelief and retaliate against
them on their own soil, carry out attacks
on their home soil." Local Muslim leaders
condemned Al Qaida and its appeal.

A Real Threat
On Saturday, security forces in Yemen
arrested a Sana'a University engineer-
ing student and her mother, but they
were released after it was shown that
the student had been a victim of iden-
tity theft.
President Obama said Oct. 29 in a tele-
vised news conference that the packages
headed for the United States constituted
a "credible terrorist threat" and had been
addressed to Jewish organizations in the
Chicago area.
One of the reported targets was
Congregation Or Chadash, which serves
gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender
Jews, and shares space with Emanuel
Congregation, a Reform temple, in
a building along Chicago's lakefront,
according to the Chicago Tribune.
A second targeted synagogue report-
edly was in Chicago's East Rogers Park
neighborhood, according to the Tribune,
though the newspaper reported that no

synagogues have been operating in the
neighborhood since 2002.
One of the bombs, which was identi-
fied and defused Oct. 29 at a FedEx way
station in the United Arab Emirates,
bore the hallmarks of an Al Qaida bomb,
Dubai police said. A second, similar
bomb was located on the same day in
London.
The mail bomb found in Dubai report-
edly traveled on two passenger planes to
reach the country, Qatar Airways report-
edly said Sunday.
Hidden inside printer cartridges, the
explosives were large enough to bring
down an airplane and could be deto-
nated by remote control. The bombs had
the same chemical substance, PETN,
used by the Christmas Day bomber last
December, who failed to ignite the explo-
sive in his underwear as his plane landed
in Detroit.
In the latest incident, Brennan said
that officials are trying to determine
whether the planes or the synagogues
were the intended targets.

ADL Counsel
Last Friday, the Oakland County-based
Michigan Regional Office of the Anti-
Defamation League (ADL) issued a
security alert to all Jewish institutions
in Michigan. The alert said all pack-
ages mailed from overseas, particularly
from Great Britain, Yemen and Saudi
Arabia, are suspect; it outlined proce-
dures for handling and reporting such
items if received.
The ADL alert said, in part, "If a pack-
age originated from overseas (particular-
ly from one of the above countries) and
you determine that the addressee/recipi-
ent is not expecting the package, it is
appropriate to evacuate the area, isolate
the package and call law enforcement."
In a statement, the Warren-based
Council of Islamic Organizations of
Michigan condemned threats of attack
on all places of worship and against the
United States.
"We are thankful to our law enforce-
ment agencies to uncover this plot before
it could cause any harm to a place of
worship:' said the co-chairs, Imam Elturk
and Imam Baqir Berry, of the Imam's
Committee of the Council of Islamic
Organizations of Michigan.
