Missed Opportunity
The Jewish News and the Jewish
Community Relations Council
missed a great opportunity to truly
inform us on the positions of each
gubernatorial candidate in regards
to issues facing our Jewish com-
munity ("Who Can Bring Us Jobs
And Prosperity?" Oct. 28, page 17).
In the 11 questions asked, only one
pertained directly to our Jewish
community.
For the rest of the questions, we
could have gotten the candidates'
positions from any number of gen-
eral publications in the area.
Why didn't you ask each candidate
whether they will continue to sup-
port the state's $1.52 million direct
funding to our local agencies: JVS,
JFS, JARC, Kadima, Friendship Circle
and the JCC?
What are each candidate's
thoughts on the disproportion-
ate cuts to Oakland County's
Community Mental Health agencies
that fund our community programs?
Not only would we know where
they stood, but we also would then
have a public record that we could
hold them accountable. But I guess
the good news is that I now know
where they stand on prison spending.

Rauf Revealed
I wonder where those who defend
Imam Faisal Abdul Rauf as a patriot
get their definition of American
patriotism ("Changing Islam's Face
Sept. 9, page 5). To me, the basic
definition of American patriotism is
the defense of the Constitution and
the security of the country.
Imam Rauf has stated that our
country needs to be more shariah
[Muslim law) compliant; shariah law
is, in many respects, the antithesis
of the U.S. Constitution. Rauf has
refused to condemn Islamic ter-
rorist groups (like Hamas) that are
self-proclaimed enemies of America.
Many more examples can be found if
only one spends time doing research
on Rauf.
Shariah law is a religious and
political philosophy. What Rauf is
speaking about when he talks about
the triumph of Islam is not just a
religious triumph, but also a politi-
cal triumph. It is amazing to me the

reasoning that refuses to acknowl-
edge the evil of extreme Islam, that
supports Rauf and that supports his
desire to build the Cordoba mosque
(Park51 Community Center) next to
the World Trade Center site in New
York City.

Thank You, Marsha
As colleagues in Jewish communal
work, it was with deep regret that
we recently learned that Marsha
Goldsmith Kamin is no longer asso-
ciated with Jewish Senior Life of
Metropolitan Detroit ("JSL Cuts,"
Sept. 16, page 16).
It is not our intent that any of us
should interfere with the adminis-
tration of a sister Jewish agency in
our community; furthermore, we
believe it would be inappropriate
for us to do so. However, we want
to recognize the work that Marsha
has carried out on behalf of what we
know as the Oak Park neighborhood
community and agencies.
To us, her colleagues in many of
our mutual endeavors, Marsha has
been a leader, a mentor and a friend.
To our constituents, she has been
an example of what is the best that
a Jewish community professional
can bring to bear as we strive for
much-needed solutions to people
problems.
We believe that Marsha's work
and the resulting positive impact
on our institutions throughout the
Oak Park and surrounding cities of
Huntington Woods, Southfield and
beyond should be recognized and
commended publicly.
Without her many contribu-
tions during her nearly 20 years of
involvement, the vibrancy if Judaism
that is now visible would not be
experienced by the Jewish commu-
nity of south Oakland County.
