or most of the 350 attendees at the
Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of
Fame induction dinner on Oct. 25,
the focus was on the four new inductees
(George Cantor, Richard Foreman, Richard
Goldberg, Larry Sherman), the Book of Life
honoree (Nate Huffman), the Alvin Foon
honorees (Richard and Sandra Dauch),
the Jewish News high school athletes of
the year (Matt Felsenfeld, Jason Zucker
and Allie Stein), and the Bill Hertz
Memorial Scholarship winners (Jaclyn
Tolchin and Jeremy Ross).
So you'll have to forgive Ethan
Perlman, 14, and his grandfather,
Charles Perlman, 91, both of West
Bloomfield, if they had another little
task at hand.
Sure, they both like coming to the annual Michigan
Jewish Sports Foundation fundraiser, held this year at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek Southfield.
"I like it a lot:' said Charles. "The people here are
friends and I know a lot of people here."
Ethan, son of Peter and Carrie Perlman and a student
at Eton Academy in Birmingham, had his own reasons for
returning to the dinner for a second year: "I like spending
time with my Grandpa."
However, just around the corner in the Shaarey Zedek
social hall was another compelling reason. Inside a plexi-
glass case on the silent-auction table was a baseball auto-
graphed by Detroit Tigers' third baseman Brandon Inge.

While Ethan, Charles, cousin Leslie Perlman and the
other guests were enjoying the food stations and the
socializing before the formal program, Ethan kept his eye
on the ball. No one had yet put in a bid.
When the call for last bids came, grandfather and
grandson walked over and signed in for $60, the mini-
mum bid. Then they watched anxiously as a few minutes
slipped by and the bidding closed.
Ethan's smile lit up the room as he realized he had won
the prize.
The only bigger smile that evening came during the pro-
gram, when master of ceremonies Don Shane stood on a
chair to be photographed with 7'1" former Maccabi Tel Aviv
and Toronto Raptors center Nate Huffman of Battle Creek. ❑
