Rock On

hen performing, the Who's
Pete Townshend is like light-
ening: bright and sharp, diz-
zying, dazzling, loud and frantic.
Behind the scenes, photographer
Lynn Goldsmith sees "a quiet, gen-
tle and respectful person — the very
opposite of what he is on stage."
With her camera and her careful
eye, Goldsmith has seen some of the
world's biggest celebrities in ways no
one else could ever imagine. Many
of these photos will be on display
at the Jewish Community Center's
Janice Charach Gallery, which
opens the "Jews Who Rock" exhibit
5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2. A tribute
to rock 'n' roll's greatest icons, the
exhibit will include a sale of music
memorabilia such as vintage posters,
records, photos and books, including
Goldsmith's Rock and Roll, a coffee-
table photo book, and Photodiary,
Goldsmith's own story.
Goldsmith, who was born and
raised in Detroit and remains pas-
sionate about the city, describes

W

the camera as "a
passport in time to
people's lives." It is
a "paintbrush that
investigates issues
of identity," a tool
that allows her to
challenge appear-
ances and reveal
what's authentic.
Among
Goldsmith's most
genial subjects was
the late Michael
Jackson. He was,
she says, "very,
Lynn
very shy" and
Goldsmith
"incredibly col-
laborative," eager
to accommodate in whatever way
possible.
And, Goldsmith says, the very
celebrities you would think would
be so beyond whether they have a
wrinkle or two are often the most
obsessed with their appearances.
Even seemingly down-to-earth sing-
ers "want to be rock stars and live
forever." 0

Jews Who Rock" runs Nov. 2-Dec. 23 at the Janice Charach Gallery
inside the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. Lynn Goldsmith
opens the exhibit 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Monday through Thursday and noon-4 p.m. Sunday. The gallery also will
host a party with food and live music by the Detroit Stimulus Package
6-8:30 p.m. Nov.18, followed by Rock of Ages at the Fisher Theatre. To
purchase tickets, call the Gallery at (248) 432-5579.
