Staying The Course
The research identified thou-
sands of Jews in their 20s and
30s who are devoted enough to
Jewish life and causes to invest
their time, energy and creativity
in leading their peers.
Notably, the study underscores
the solid impact of community,
foundation and philanthropic
investments in Jewish education
over the past 20 years. Let there
be no doubt: Jewish learning
matters!
"Leaders in their 20s and 30s
have benefited disproportion-
ately from more intensive forms
of Jewish education than that
received by their peers who do
not serve in leadership posi-
tions," states the study.
Clearly, Jewish America isn't
lacking in committed and
knowledgeable young talent.
Further, options to get involved
communally are plentiful,
depending on where you live. As
the Detroit Jewish community
strives to recalibrate its approach
to retaining and attracting young
adults, it can take heart in the
national trends, which not only
hold promise, but also delineate
areas to improve.
Take it from the Wertheimer
study team: Given the various
permutations of belief and com-
mitments, Jewish leaders in the
target age group are far from
monolithic. They'll keep things
humming as well as edgy. They'll
respect their elders, but not hesi-
tate to be inventive.
Their diversity and divisive-
ness are part of both the excite-
ment and the challenge of grap-
pling with this generation of
change.
