hen patrons enter the West
Bloomfield JCC, in addition to
the smells of Jerusalem Pizza's
baked dishes, they are now welcomed by
the aroma of freshly roasted coffee from
the new Chazzano Cafe at the J, set in the
center of the eatery.
"Since we opened a year ago, we've
had a giant, empty bar in the middle of
the restaurant:' said Brian Jacobs who
owns the West Bloomfield Jerusalem
Pizza with Paul Engel, both of Southfield.
"When Chazzano owner, Frank Lanzkron-
Tamarazo said it would be a great location
for the coffee area, it seemed like a perfect
match."
On Aug. 25, the two, who are partners
in the new endeavor, opened the kosher
coffee bar inside the 70-seat Jerusalem
Pizza. The area features new coffee and
espresso equipment and a bar, behind
which freshly roasted coffee is brewed
with French presses and vacuum siphons.
Chazzano Cafe at the J also offers bagels
prepared by Eric Zucker, co-owner, with
Jacobs, of Jerusalem Bagel, based at the
Southfield Jerusalem Pizza. The cafe also
serves non-coffee drinks including smooth-
ies, hot chocolate and hot apple cider.
Bags of Chazzano Coffee may be pur-
chased by the pound — whole bean or
ground — at the cafe, which also pro-
vides coffee catering.
"This location is an absolute perfect fit
for our business model;' said Lanzkron-
Tamarazo, who also owns Chazzano Coffee
Roasters in Ferndale.
"There is a constant flow of people in
and out of the Center who really appreci-

ate great coffees and espressos:' Lanzkron-
Tamarazo of Farmington Hills said. "We
are looking forward to a long relationship
at this location:'
Something For Everyone
Locally, a growing number of stores sell
Chazzano coffees as well as restaurants
that serve the products. Chazzano Coffee
Roasters, which uses only fair trade and
organic coffee beans, recently signed
a 10-year contract with King Coffee to
distribute Chazzano coffee throughout
Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. Chazzano's
mail-order business, Carefree Coffee Club,
delivers fresh roasted coffee to customers
throughout the country twice each month.
With nothing going to waste, Lanzkron-
Tamarazo said, "The chaff from the roast-
ing process is donated to a chicken farmer
who uses it for lining her chicken coop.
The used coffee grounds and burlap bags
are donated to the Family Block Club
Community Garden in Detroit. Any coffee
that goes unsold after two weeks is donat-
ed to the Community Housing Network
and the Day House in Detroit. Each Friday,
we donate coffee to Raise the Roof for
Affordable Housing, also in Detroit:'
Jerusalem Pizza, Chazzano Cafe and
Chazzano Coffee Roasters coffees are certi-
fied kosher by the Council of Orthodox
Rabbis of Greater Detroit in Southfield.
Both the restaurant and the cafe use
only cholov Yisrael dairy products, which
require special kashrut supervision.
Jerusalem Pizza, which also has an
eatery in Southfield, offers a menu that
includes pizza, salads, sandwiches and
calzones. The restaurant caters and added
curbside service for carryout orders.
Beginning in November, both Jerusalem

Pizza and the cafe plan to open Saturday
nights from after Shabbat until midnight.
"With all the members, activities, meet-
ings and staff who work at the Center, we
are able to serve a lot different people,'
Jacobs said. "We are here first thing in the
morning with coffee; we serve breakfast,
lunch and dinner; and we have smoothies
and hot chocolate for the [Frankel Jewish
Academy of Metropolitan Detroit] students
who have classes in the building.
"Early in the mornings, I see teachers
and members starting their days at the
cafe. And later on, it's great to see people
sitting on the 12 bar stools, eating pizza
and drinking Chazzano coffee. I think
combining the two is catching on:'
