W
ith a stand-up comedy show entitled "Half Jewish,
Half Very Jewish:' you know comedian Elon Gold
is bound to strike a chord with a predominantly
Jewish crowd. Gold, who lives in Los Angeles and has appeared
on numerous television shows, including The Tonight Show with
Jay Leno, entertained about 600 people on Sept. 28 at the Max
M. Fisher Music Center in Detroit during Kadima's 26th annual
benefit. His routine, which included offbeat impressions and
ethnic jokes, sent participants home with a smile. But there was
a serious side to the benefit as well for the Southfield-based
mental health agency.
"Our economy is struggling, our agency has sustained cuts in
public and private funding, and our requests for services contin-
ue to grow:' Kadima President Sandi Tamaroff of West Bloomfield told the crowd. "Each
year, the generosity of the community helps us expand programs, services, residential
homes and number of clients served:'
This year, Kadima launched a new child and adolescent program to serve young
people, ages 8-18, who are diagnosed with serious emotional and behavioral disorders.
Adult programs include 25 residential group homes, individual and family therapy, and
support services for seniors such as Ray Gottleib, a client who was hospitalized and
evicted from his apartment before he came to Kadima (Hebrew for "Forward"). He and
his family also spoke during the event.
"Kadima provided therapy, managed his finances and paid his bills," said his daugh-
ter-in-law Julie Gottlieb of Sylvan Lake. "Ray would not be where he is today without
Kadima's services. He probably wouldn't be alive without their services. We are grateful
to publicly say thank you."
Spotted in the crowd were: Michele and Eli Saulson and Elizabeth Guz, all of
Franklin; Claire and Mary Tamaroff and Gail and Bob Katz, all of West Bloomfield. ❑
