Bernero: Illegal immigration is a

serious issue, no doubt. I support
enforcing existing laws, finding a
path to citizenship and bringing the
underground economy into the light
so we can gain revenue.
Local and national laws certainly
must be obeyed and more strongly
enforced.

Snyder: Michigan is estimated to
have the 16th highest number of
illegal immigrants in the nation.
Border protection, constitutionally,
is a federal responsibility, and our
federal government is failing to pro-
tect our borders.
We need to secure our borders.
The federal government should
make illegal immigration more dif-
ficult and legal immigration easier.

JN: Is there a need for a state con-

stitutional convention? Why or
why not?

Snyder: In theory, I believe that

a state constitutional convention
sounds like democracy at its best.
But because of practical reasons, I
can't support the proposal.
The reality is that special interests
from across the country would flood
into Michigan and turn the whole
convention into a circus at a time
when our state, both elected officials
and citizens, need to be focused on
the immediate economic and gov-
ernment fiscal crises before us.
After we solve some of those major
issues, we can begin to work with the
citizens of the state to look at ways to
modernize our state's constitution.

Bernero: No. We need to focus our

attention exclusively on getting
Michigan's economy back on track
and getting our citizens back to work.
Revamping our state constitution
can wait until we have stabilized our
state economy. And a constitutional
convention would cost tens of mil-
lions of dollars that Michigan just
doesn't have to spare right now.
