Combat Intermarriage
I must commend Rabbi Elimelech
Silberberg for his bold public stand
about the ills of intermarriage ("Sarah's
Lesson Of Destiny:' Sept. 2, page 78).
The fact that anyone needs to be
bold on this issue is an indictment
of the times in which we live. While
some may disagree on the damage
that mixed unions can cause, I find
it unbelievable that anyone actually
believes it's a wonderful thing. One
reader even pointed out that "mixed
marriages became inevitable once Jews
no longer lived in shtetls." Sadly, that
point is true. But should we simply
accept our fate and let our religion fade
into oblivion simply because we live in
a democratic society?
Rabbi Silberberg's plea of promoting
Torah day schools is the No. 1 antidote
to combat the intermarriage trend. Only
a small percentage of children who
attend Torah day schools from K-12
ends up marrying outside the faith. Is
this to be frowned upon? Do people
actually want to see our intermarriage
rate go from 50 percent to 75 percent?
If an intermarried couple are truly
determined to raise their children as
Jews (especially if the wife is Jewish),
then those who help them along that
path shouldn't be frowned upon. But
on the same token, where is the harm
in preventing such circumstances from
happening in the first place? Like other
religions, we should be unequivocally
proud of our heritage and do everything
in our power to ensure it stands the test
for all-time.

The articles (including the editorial
opinion "Building A Congregation,"
Sept. 2, page 45) that have run in the
Jewish News have helped sustain our
momentum. We are proud of our
growth and we were not going to be
discouraged by economic conditions.

Uplifting Service
I am a proud member of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek and am excited to share
that our shul has created a brand-new
Friday evening Kabbalat Shabbat ser-
vice called Music and Motzi. It is both
inspiring and enlightening; and it is
generating a lot of positive feedback
and excitement throughout the entire
congregation.
Our cantor and clergy team have
gathered a group of local Jewish talent
from the congregational member-
ship that leads us in prayer. Everyone's
energy can be felt and it puts the par-
ticipants in a good, relaxed and spiri-
tual mood, ready to enjoy the spirit of
Shabbat!
What a wonderful time to be a
member of Shaarey Zedek, an inno-
vative, creative and wonderful place
where spiritually uplifting Jewish
prayer and top-notch Jewish education
is such a high priority. While Music
and Motzi is just one example, I hope
others will come and experience the
blessing of Shabbat and Jewish life at
Shaarey Zedek.

Synagogue Growth
The JN has published a series of arti-
cles on the growth of Young Israel of
Southfield — what I call its rebirth.
As a member for more than 35 years,
the number of new families that have
joined (22) is to me exciting and amaz-
ing. The expansion (the second in 10
years) is now complete and our congre-
gation is proudly utilizing this beautiful,
yet practical facility for daily and early
Shabbat services as well as youth groups
and classes.

Correction
Karen Davidson and her family will
not be honored at the Oct. 23 "Stars
Guitars" benefit for the Charles A.

they will be honored at the Oct. 21
