T

his year has been a "tornado of
change" for the Holocaust Memorial
Center Zekelman Family Campus,
according to its executive director, and
more than 700 people learned why at the
HMC's 26th anniversary dinner Oct. 10 at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Southfield.
President Gary Karp outlined an array of
accomplishments that included embracing
the concept of temporary exhibits, creat-
ing and solidifying relationships within the
Jewish community and maintaining educa-
tion as a top priority. He credited Stephen
Goldman, new executive director, and staff
with the progress.
Continuing goals include increasing mem-
bership and fundraising, and establishing a
permanent display devoted to local survi-
vors.
The event honored members of the Shaarit
Haplaytah ("the Remnant" survivors of the
Holocaust) who helped found the HMC 26
years ago. "The pain we carry can never be
forgotten:' said Abraham Weberman, Shaarit
Haplaytah president. "Our story must be told
to our children and grandchildren and never
be forgotten:'
In addition to a silent auction, the eve-
ning included a talk by John Loftus, a for-
mer federal prosecutor, who spoke about
his new book that exposes the U.S. Justice
Department's role in hiding Nazi war crimi-
nals from Congressional investigations. ❑
