Volaric: The Democratic Party and
other leftist groups must be forced to
recognize and accept that conflicts in the
Middle East are not tools to be used in
advancing their radical domestic politi-
cal agenda.
If negotiations with the Palestinian
Authority fail, the United States should
cease all aid, announce that the "peace
process" is dead and tell the Palestinian
people that when they change their lead-
ers to those who want and will honestly
work toward peace, the United States
stands ready to help them.
We should:
• Recognize that no peace is possible
until nations and non-state actors in the
Middle East acknowledge Israel's right to
exist. That means insisting that no nego-
tiations with the Palestinian Authority
take place until all of Israel's neighbors
have recognized it and established diplo-
matic relations.
• Make it completely and unequivo-
cally clear that in the event of any attack
on Israel, the United States will provide
any level of support necessary to ensure

the safety and survival of Israel.
• Make it completely and unequivo-
cally clear that any nation that employs,
encourages or arms any non-state actor
in the region will be held politically and
military responsible for the non-state
actor's actions.

JN: How critical is it that Iran does
not get nuclear weapons and what
should the U.S. do to ensure it
doesn't?

Volaric: It was of paramount
importance that Iran be prevented
from obtaining nuclear weapons.
Unfortunately, because the U.S. has
adopted a policy of wishful thinking on
this issue, it is too late to prevent it.
The Iranian government must
be informed that we will hold them
responsible for any action taken with
any weapons they produce, regardless of
"ownership" or "control" at time of use.

Levin: Iran's nuclear program represents
a severe threat to Israel and American
national interests. I support the multi-
lateral efforts of the Obama administra-
tion to impose sanctions to curb Iran's
nuclear program.
I cosponsored and worked
actively on the Comprehensive
Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and
Divestment Act, which was recently
approved by Congress, which impos-
es an array of tough new economic
penalties aimed at persuading Iran to
change its conduct.

Levin: The U.S. and Israel are close
allies and share an important strategic
relationship. Our continued strong
support for Israel is vital as negotia-
tions with the Palestinian Authority go
forward.
While U.S. leadership is needed to
assist the peace process, the course
and outcome of the negotiations are in
the hands of Israel and the Palestinian
Authority. A peace agreement cannot
be imposed by well-meaning third
parties. It is also clear that continued
U.S. support will be needed if and
when an agreement is reached.
