there. I hear daily about Mr. Levin's
disregard for their interests and refusal
to listen to them. After I'm elected, my
job will be to listen to the citizens of the
district and represent their interests.

JN: What do you think of President

Obama's handling of the economy?
What has he done right and what
has he done wrong?

Volaric: Mr. Obama's handling of
the economy has been an even more
incompetent performance than that of
President Carter. At every opportunity,
he has taken the choice of creating
economic uncertainty, intruding on the
lives of citizens, penalizing the business-
es that would create jobs, and squander-
ing resources on favored groups and
ideologically "correct" fantasies.
As chairman of the House Ways and
Means Committee, Mr. Sander Levin
has responsibility for this miserable
performance, since these terrible deci-
sions could not have been enacted
without his full support and encour-
agement.

Levin: When it took office, the Obama

administration inherited the worst
economy since the Great Depression.
The economy was shedding nearly
800,000 jobs a month. Since then —
in large part due to the Economic
Recovery Act and other measures
approved by Congress, as well actions
taken by the Administration and
Federal Reserve — the U.S. economy
is growing again and creating jobs.
More could have been accomplished
if the president had received support
from the Republican leadership in
Congress. Instead, the Republicans in
the House and Senate have sat on the
sidelines and opposed every effort
to get the economy back on its feet.
Congressional Republicans opposed the
Recovery bill, Wall Street reform, small
business tax cuts and even efforts to
end the shipping of jobs overseas.

JN: What should the United States

do to promote and support a peace
agreement between Israel and the
Palestinian Authority? If nego-
tiations fail should the U.S. and
Quartet impose an agreement?

Inside The 12th District

Voters in Michigan's 12th Congressional District will decide whether
incumbent Democrat Sander Levin or Republican challenger Don Volaric
will represent them in the 112th Congress.
The district includes Southfield, Lathrup Village, Oak Park, Huntington
Woods, Royal Oak Township, Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, Hazel Park,
Madison Heights and parts of Royal Oak in Oakland County. In Macomb
County, the district includes Warren, Fraser, Roseville, St. Clair Shores,
Mt. Clemens, Eastpointe, Center Line, Clinton and Lake Townships and
part of Sterling Heights.

Jewish Population Centers

The 12th District was once a reliably Democratic district with the bulk
of Michigan's Jewish population, but now encompasses part of Macomb
County as well as the traditionally Jewish areas of Oak Park and
Southfield. Don Volaric is one of many Republicans nationwide hoping
to upset Democratic incumbents, and there are few Democrats more
incumbent that Levin who has represented the district since 1982.
Supporters of Levin point to his recent ascension to chairman of the
powerful House Ways and Means Committee as one more reason to
keep him in Congress, while critics see it as even more reason to defeat
him and work for Republican control of the House.
While Levin is running on his record and political clout, Volaric hopes
to ride a wave of voter discontent with the Obama administration and
Congress.
