Not For Women Only from page 46

12-14. Katz, who owns a plumbing
company based in Farmington Hills,
is still deciding.

Mind Over Matter
Stein estimates that 65 percent of
the walkers are first-timers. "It's
three days of Porta Johns, portable
showers, hot, stuffy tents and not
the greatest food."
"A lot of people won't do it more
than once Katz says.
It's also expensive, since each par-
ticipant must raise at least $2,300.
"I have a corps of [financial] sup-
porters:' Linovitz says. "But Bert is
the big fundraiser. He has been the
No. 1 fundraiser in Michigan; this
year he was No. 3."
"I think the three of us have a
passion. Instead of just talking, we
try to give Stein says.
Still, each has his reason for join-
ing what Stein calls "a sisterhood
function."
Katz's wife, Marlene, died at age
58 from breast cancer. Linovitz's
wife, Francine, is a breast cancer
survivor. And Stein, who has a wife,
four daughters and three grand-
daughters, walks "to find a cure
before it touches any of my eight
ladies."

breast cancer, although caught early

"Sye was very concerned about me

and started hearing about the 3-Day
breast cancer walk and thought
it would be a way of helping me
through this:' Francine says.

Every Step Counts
"Sye may not tell me that often in
words how much he loves me and
cares about my illness:' Francine,
"but he does with every step he
takes, with all his injuries, walking
even with a surgical boot on his
foot. What a wonderful way to share
his love and care."
"The challenge of walking that
many miles drove us at first:' Sye
says. But after spending three days
among breast cancer survivors
and those who walked on behalf of
friends, co-workers or loved ones "we
became overwhelmed with the event."
"They're very committed:' says
Marion Stein. "Although we haven't
been directly hit, we have several
friends, including Francine, who
have.
"I could never do it," she adds.
"I walk, but I'm not that kind of a
walker. They work at it."
"The two girls [Francine and
Marion] come to the closing cer-
emonies together:' Bert says. "I think
they respect what we are doing." El
