Nuremberg Documents
WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Original
documents of the Nuremberg Laws
were placed on display at the National
Archives in Washington. The papers,
believed to be the only copies of the
laws to exist, were transferred in
August from the Huntington Library,
Art Collections and Botanical Gardens
in California.
Gen. George Patton was given the
papers by U.S. soldiers who found
them in a German bank vault; Patton
disobeyed orders by taking them out of
Germany. He gave the documents to the
Huntington in 1945.
Hitler signed the laws, which codi-
fied the systematic extermination of
is achieved through
a powerful
Jews in Nazi Germany, in 1935. The
pages specify what made a person
Jewish. Those who were defined as
Jewish were stripped of their German
citizenship.
The laws were broken into three
broad categories that included forbid-
ding intermarriage or cohabitation
between Aryans and Jews and estab-
lishing the swastika flag for Germany.
Hiker's Desert Ordeal
JERUSALEM (JTA) -- A Jewish hiker
recounting his survival experiences
stranded in the desert said he tried
to say as much of the Shema Yisrael
prayer as he could remember.
Edward Rosenthal, 64, at a news con-
ference last week described his ordeal
in which he lost his way in the canyons
of the Joshua Tree National Park after
intending to hike for four miles on a
familiar trail. He had taken only about a
pint of water with him.
Rosenthal told reporters that he
experienced a "miracle" when he
prayed for rain and "10 seconds later
it rained." He said he had not been a
very devout Jew, but tried to say as
much of the Shema as he could recall.
The prominent Los Angeles real
estate broker was rescued Sept. 30
deep in a canyon where he had lain in
the shade for several days. Rosenthal
estimated that he lost 20 pounds dur-
ing his ordeal.
Title VI Progress
WASHINGTON (JTA) -- The Zionist
Organization of America praised the
U.S. Department of Education for its
efforts to protect Jewish students from
anti-Semitic harassment and dis-
crimination.
U.S. Rep, Brad Sherman, D-Calif.,
with Sen. Arlen Specter, D-Pa., intro-
duced legislation last month that
would amend the Civil Rights Act
of 1964, whose Title VI prohibits
discrimination based on "race, color,
or national origin',' to also include
religion.
Sherman reported on Oct. 4 that
after speaking with Education
Secretary Arne Duncan, he is "more
than cautiously optimistic" that the
Department of Education will begin
enforcing Title VI to protect Jewish
students.
In a statement posted on his web-
site, Sherman specifically acknowl-
edged the ZOM contribution to this
result. The ZOA has led efforts to
bring about legislative changes to Title

COMMUNITY ALERT
- American Bulk Food, West Bloomfield, Michigan is no longer under our supervision.
"Kosher only meat slicers! It has come to our attention that certain local grocery stores have designated one meat
slicer of the several at their deli counters as a "kosher only slicer and are selling fresh cut deli meat, alongside the
non-kosher. While this is a lovely gesture designed to serve the kosher consumer, these items are absolutely prohib-
ited. Open packages of meat need constant and reliable supervision. Even if the meat sold was kosher at the outset,
and even assuming no mistakes had been made throughout the day by which someone may have accidentally sliced
ham on that slicer, the handling all day by non-Jewish workers without reliable rabbinical supervision renders these
cold cuts non-kosher. Please consult your rabbi as to appropriate koshering of any utensils they may have been con-
taminated as a result of use of these products.
