Time's Cover Blunder
I was as dumbfounded as Community
View writer Berl Falbaum ("Time's
Twisted Tale,' Sept. 23, page 33) when I
first saw the cover of the Sept. 13 Time
magazine and its inflammatory headline,
"Why Israel Doesn't Care About Peace." I
figured it was just a lame attempt to sell
a few more magazines, mainly to anti-
Semites or incredulous Jews, curiously
stunned by the provocative title.
The subject of the piece was less incen-
diary — that many Jews were tired of
worrying about peace, were reasonably
content with their financial conditions,
and recently a little less worried because
of the absence of suicide bombings. I
couldn't help thinking, so what?
Would Time try to prop up its falling
sales with a title, "Why Americans No
Longer Fear Terrorism" or "Why the U.S.
Doesn't Care if it Goes Broke?"
What should we expect in an age of
conglomerates and their falling journalism
standards in the midst of competition with
the Internet and 24-hour cable news?
Maybe Time can get a few more readers
by hiring the queen of objective journal-
ism. It just might be time to put Helen
Thomas on the payroll.

Muslim who may be the least violent and
most patriotic Imam in America. (By the
way, his expectation that Islam will tri-
umph is no more radical than our belief
that the Torah will triumph when the
Messiah comes.)

Memorable D.C. Visit
In late September, a group of World War
II veterans from the Detroit area were
taken to Washington, D.C., for the day to
visit the World War II Memorial. We left
early in the morning and were flown to
Baltimore and then taken by buses to the
Washington city limits, where we were
met by a police escort to the memorial.
Among others on the buses were Alan
Nathan and Sheldon Greenberg.
It was an unbelievable experience. The
area was jam-packed. As we stood by the
Michigan monument and looked out, it
was unreal.
The entire cost for this trip was paid for
by a donor who wishes to remain anony-
mous: transportation, meals and many
aides to help those in need of getting
around. We will never forget it: Whoever
you are, many, many thanks.

Fighting Sedition
Since U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich.,
brought up Thomas Jefferson in the
special commentary "Let Us Embrace
Religious Tolerance" (Oct. 7, page 40), I
would like to point out that Jefferson also
was a fervent enforcer of anti-sedition
laws.
First, since Jefferson called the separa-
tion of church and state, accomplished
by the First Amendment, his greatest
accomplishment, it should be clear that
the amendment is not intended to offer
protection for plotting against our coun-
try under the guise of religious freedom.
What is needed to complement reli-
gious tolerance is less tolerance for sedi-
tious behavior in some mosques across
the country.
That said, I don't see how the cause of
fighting terrorism is furthered by attack-
ing a project in New York City led by a

Crafting A Fun Time
We brought both our daughters, Erica and
Tamar, to Akiva Hebrew Day School's pre-
sukkah program "Crafting A Fun Time"
(Sept. 30, page 34).
Our older daughter Erica, in prekin-
dergarten at Southfield-based Akiva,
enjoyed the sukkah arts and crafts that
furthered strengthened everything she
had learned up to that point within the
Early Childhood Center there in regards
to the Sukkot holiday.
Ever since the event, our 2-year-old
can't stop talking about Akiva and is
ready to go. I can't wait until she enters
the program in September 2011.
All aspects of the program really
catered to kids of all ages with the proj-
ects, the toys and the singing with Rabbi
Jeffrey Ney. It was a great program!
