and to divide Jerusalem. Israel has no
more concessions to make! Jerusalem
is the united capital of the Jewish
state.
Jerusalem has thrived under Israeli
control; and the economy of both
Jews and Arabs in Jerusalem has
flourished. The Hebrew University
has been expanded and the Hadassah
Hospital on Mt. Scopus has been
rebuilt and modernized, provid-
ing medical care for people of all
nationalities and religions. This is in
sharp contrast to the cold-blooded
slaughter of doctors and nurses that
occurred in 1948 at the hands of Arab
soldiers, while the British stood by
passively.
Undoubtedly, Israeli Prime
Minister Natanyahu is being pres-
sured to relinquish a portion of
Jerusalem to the "future Palestinian
state whatever that may mean. In the
meantime, llamas is sending rockets
into southern Israel as diplomatic
meetings take place. Palestinian
Authority President Mahmoud Abbas
does not even have the recognition
or support of the majority of the
Palestinian people.
In my estimation, U.S. President
Barack Obama is ignoring the real
threats to world peace — threats that
he seems impotent to deal with. Iran
already has nuclear capability and
apparently a sophisticated delivery

system. Russia is supplying Iran with
nuclear fuel to run their reactors for
the next 10 years. China is becoming
an economic and industrial giant,
with the largest standing army in the
world. NATO has become economi-
cally bankrupted and militarily weak-
ened.
While ignoring these potential
threats throughout the world, Obama
feels that settling the "Middle East
situation" will be the answer to world
peace. It would be undiplomatic and
cynical for me to imply that Obama is
looking for a foreign policy "success"
that he can present for re-election;
but I will be outspoken and say that
is exactly his motivation.
I hope and pray that Prime
Minister Netanyahu will have the
courage not to give in to the world
pressures and not fall victim to the
false promises of the Palestinians.
They turned down Palestinian state-
hood in 1947 when it was handed to
them on a silver platter by the United
Nations; and they have been trying to
recoup their mistake ever since.
It is my fervent prayer that the flags
of Kachol Velavan, the Blue and White
flags, fly over an undivided Jerusalem
— and may it be the capital of Israel
forever.

who threaten our troops abroad and
our citizens at home.
By threatening to burn holy texts
or by holding an entire faith as some-
how responsible for the actions of its
most fanatic members, Osama bin
Laden and his kind are given precise-
ly the kind of clash of civilizations
they so desperately seek to create.
I was heartened by the words
of New York City Mayor Michael
Bloomberg, who said, "We would be
untrue to the best part of ourselves
— and who we are as New Yorkers
and Americans — if we said 'no' to a
mosque in Lower Manhattan."
I'm also encouraged by the reli-
gious leaders of many faiths across
our country who have stood up and
said, "We support the rights of all
Americans to worship in their chosen
place, through a climate of respect,
dignity and peace."
I'm heartened, too, by the reaction

in my home state, which is home to a
large, thriving and valued community
of Muslim Americans. Michigan civic
and religious leaders of many faiths
and backgrounds have invoked our
most closely held beliefs and called
on the nation to speak and act in har-
mony with those beliefs. The power of
those beliefs represents a powerful tool
against the hatred that inspired 9-11.
The founding principles of our
nation call on us to stand with voices
of tolerance and reason. Those who
have given their all in the defense of
those principles would surely hope
that we would resist the calls to
hatred and violence.
Our moral authority depends on
that. Preservation of the freedoms
that define us depends on that. Our
safety depends on that.

Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., delivered this
message in the U.S. Senate on Sept. 21.

"Flegent Street offers my dad the opportunity to live in
a beautiful, safe and highly nurturing environment that
clearly meets his individual needs. The comprehensive
team approach to medical, nursing, psychosocial and
emotional care is unique in that everything is addressed
under one roof. Communication between staff and family
is always welcomed and encouraged, and, because
live in Miami-1200 miles away, it always brings me g
comfort and peace knowing that my dad is receivin
ongoing comprehensive care and attention. There is
truly a prevailing feelin a of a 'caring community' a
