Reversing The Flight I have been following the Publisher's Notebooks written by Arthur Horwitz encouraging Detroiters to find ways to "create a vibrant future" for the young adults choosing to leave our area, "so they will want to stay, return or relocate here." I have personally witnessed par- ents saying, "I told them to go. There is nothing here anymore." Arthur Horwitz is trying to turn this attitude around. I am not originally from the Detroit area, but I love living here; and after 32 years, it is certainly home for me now I feel fortunate that I was able to raise my three daughters here; and I know how blessed I am that they all live here at this time. When I read the pledge that young leaders signed, which was published in the column entitled "A Jewish Declaration for the New Year" by Arthur Horwitz (Sept. 2, page 5) and his follow-up sug- gestions for revitalizing our Jewish com- munity, I was thrilled! I commend him for his "grassroots" approach. Special Writer Robin Schwartz also merits recognition for the companion article she wrote entitled "Detroit's Jewish Declaration" (Sept. 2, page 18). Both deserve praise for bringing this topic to the forefront of our community. Please continue to keep this issue in the public's eye. We all need to be vigilant and look for ways to help people in their 20s, 30s, and 40 stay in Michigan. We are experiencing brain drain that we cannot afford. We need their young ideas and dreams to make our state great; and they need to rediscover this wonderful place to raise a Jewish family. I encourage the Jewish News to remind readers to go to wwwthejew- ishnews.com/declaration and endorse the Southeastern Michigan Jewish Declaration so each of us can take steps to redirect our community's vision for our young Jewish adults. Duncan, asking him to assure the Title VI Civil Rights protections for Jewish students on campus: I have wondered why nearly 500 members of Congress did not sign the first letter. Not signing it certainly does not mean they were disinterested in the plight of Jewish students experiencing anti-Semitic harassment. Congressman Peters as well as other congressmen did sign the Aug. 9 addendum to the con- gressional letter sent to Duncan. Meanwhile, read Congressman Peters' letter of June 29 where, along with Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas, he inspired more than 300 members of Congress to support Israel it its defense against the Gaza- bound flotilla last May. That action shows clearly where Congressman Peters' sup- port of our Jewish community lies. Janet Halper West Bloomfield [Both the above letter and the Sept. 23 letter it refers to relate to the IN editorial "Protect Jewish Students," which ran Aug. 26 (page 37).] F. Linda Cohen Time's Dismaying Cover I was outraged with Time magazine's cover picture defaming the Jewish Star with its caption "Why Israel Doesn't Care About Peace" and the article "The Good Life and Its Dangers" (Sept. 13). Israelis were portrayed as living the good life — prosperous and disengaged from the peace process. Maybe the author should have inter- viewed the other 90 percent of the popula- tion who are probably exhausted, which may have been confused as lack of interest. Along with my outrage with the maga- zine has been my disappointment with the lack of response from the other news media. I waited for numerous Jewish communities to be quite verbal. I was hoping our community as well as the Jewish News would have discussed the issue as well. Franklin Carol R.
