■ four questions Columnist Robin Schwartz answers the Four Questions. Television news viewers and Detroit Jewish News readers know me as Robin Schwartz, a weekend anchor/reporter at WJBK-TV (Fox 2) and JNfreelance columnist. But at home in Oakland County, I'm also a busy wife, mother and member of the Detroit Jewish community. I didn't know a single person in Michigan when I moved here in - 1998 to pursue my broadcasting career; looking back, I'm so glad I took that chance. I met my husband, Jon Goldstein, here (he was director of our Federation's Young Adult Division at the time, and I served on the YAD board for several years); we were married six years ago this month. Being a reporter in Detroit has given me the opportunity to WHAT BOOK, CD OR OTHER MEDIA DO YOU LONG TO SHARE? Our daughter, Olivia, loves books more than any- thing else. Every time we finish reading to her she excitedly says, "Again!" Through her, I've redis- covered so many wonderful children's books. One of them is Birthday Presents by Eugene Fern. (I still remember the illustrations from when I was a child.) It's the story of a boy who receives a special gift that isn't like all of the toys his friends receive. It's something he's ultimately able to share with thousands of people. The book has an important and enduring lesson: the newest, hottest, material things are not really our most valuable gifts. cover everything from breaking news and political scandals to FOX envi- ronmental stories and news features, including a personal story about my struggle with infertility that won an Emmy Award. Fortunately, that story had a happy ending! Now, we're busy raising our precocious daughter, Olivia, 2, and watching with amazement as she grows. I grew up in Philadelphia. I'm 41, and I'm a graduate of Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Communications. I have a passion for writing, and I enjoy covering vari- ous happenings in the local Jewish community for the JN. Since this Four Questions column began, I've seen the many different ways people have replied. Here, you'll find my answers to our version of the Four Questions. — Robin Schwartz WHICH HISTORICAL JEWISH FIGURE WOULD YOU HAVE BRUNCH WITH? She's not a historical figure in the traditional sense, but Rose Gersten is an important historical figure in my life. She was my great-grandmother. I never met her, but I was named after her, I've seen her pictures and I've heard stories about her speaking publicly about politics on a "soapbox" in the early 1900s. When my grandmother passed away several years ago, we found Rose's marriage certificate in mint condition. My mom had it framed for me, so I know the exact date. This year marked the 100th anniversary of her marriage. I'd love to have brunch with her and find out more about the woman who played a key role in my being here today. WHAT IMPORTANT LIFE LESSONS HAVE YOU RECENTLY LEARNED? Sadly, my father, David Schwartz, died this sum- mer at age 68. He bravely battled stage four liver cancer. Through his death, I learned how precious and how short life really is and that we really do need to make the most of the time we have. Often the things we waste time agonizing over and wor- rying about are not what really matters in the end. WHAT WOULD PEOPLE BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? In no particular order: I can make a quilt from scratch; I have a unique ability to memorize song lyrics and can effortlessly rattle off the words to several rap songs; I'm right-handed but can only hit a softball left-handed; I still have a baby blanket that's now four decades old (it's in pretty rough shape, but I simply can't part with it). ■ 1111INIV YOUR FRIENDS & FAMILY THE TRAVELING PHOTO BOOTH Incredible favors, a priceless guest book and award-winning entertainment Busch's Central Kitchen: Made From Scratch At Busch's, we have a long tradition of making our deli and bakery items from scratch.
